no sound
Compaq Presario V6630em Win 7 32bit.
I have a red x at sound which says no audio output device installed and there is no trace of sound device in device manager.Tried reinstalling connexant hd audio driver from program files but still have no sound.
Can anyone help me with this problem. Thanks

Boot into the bios and make sure the audio is enabled.

There are no Sound/audio devices in Device Manager at all? What about Communication devices? I've seen audio devices mistakely listed there.
Was that system upgraded from Vista? I don't see Win7 listed on the support site.

Was the sound working previously?

It was upgraded to win7. 2 years ago and the sound was previously working.
I cant remember where I got the drivers, I think they could have come through windows update I've had other drivers from there. There's no communication devices in device manager.

If Windows can't see the device at all, I'd double check the bios settings. See if there is any other audio related setting.
Is the modem enabled or not? If not, try enabling it.

Checked bios there's only a sound button which is enabled and there is nothing for a modem even in device manager no modem. I noticed in the connexant folder in program files there's a sound driver and a modem driver so I tried to reinstall them but it didn't work it just said there is no device detected for this driver

According to the support site, it should have a modem onboard. See if there is an RJ-11 port. Both devices are Conexant, so I suspect they are both the same chip (the reason why sound cards are sometimes seen under Communication devices).
The audio was enabled so I tried disabling and then enabling audio but still red x
Did you disable and reboot, and then re-enable and reboot?
I see 1 BIOS update listed, but it doesn't mention audio.
When was the last time it was working?

Yes I did disable and reboot, and then re-enable and reboot.
I gave this laptop to my mum to use and she's been complaining of no sound for a few weeks and it was working

What does an rj-11 port look like

Hmm. Maybe the audio chip just died. If Windows can't even detect it, there's not a whole lot you can do. I suppose you could try a system restore, but it still sounds like a hardware issue to me.
