Net gear router DG834G v5 problam

This thing works ok until a laptop or netbook is turned on.
On the laptop I can see the network name but it won't connect.
I have to turn off the router and restart it.
    Then the laptop will connect.
This happens to every laptop or netbook.
    Any ideas.

Did you update it with the latest firmware?

    http://support.netgear.com/app/produ...ZTaw%3D%3D
    Latest Firmware Version 1.6.01.34

Are you using any 802.11b devices? If not, set the router to G-only.

What encryption type are you using?

    Firmware is up to date.
    I don't anything about 802.11b devices
I have changed to "g" only. ( I will post back if it makes a difference.
Encryption is WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key
I have read that these netgear routers only have a short life span about 1 year then start over heating and playing up.
    Is this correct?
    Thanks

Are you using TKIP or AES? Your router may not list it, though. I'll have to download the manual and look later.

Is there a reason you don't use WPA2?

Not sure about the "one year lifespan" thing. See if it's still under warranty.

Try doing a "30-30-30 Reset" on that router (don't forget to make a careful note of your settings first).

    1) Hold down the reset button on the router for 30 seconds
    2) While still holding down the button, turn off the mains power to the router for 30 seconds
    3) While still holding down the reset button, power up the router again, and continue to hold it for a further 30 seconds.

It does a kind of "deep reset" of Netgear routers, and it often solves these kinds of issue.
