    USB Mouse not working

Strange one here. The USB ports are working b/c they all recognize and use all other USB sevices including a keyboard. But if I plug in a USB mouse, it gave the ding sound like it detects any USB device when it is plugged in. But the mouse just won't work. I have tried amny different known working mice.

    XP SP3.

Go to Device Manager and uninstall all instances of the mouse that you find in there. Then reboot the computer and reinstall the mouse driver.

That's the thing. The mouse is not listed in Device Manage at all.

falcon2000--Since other mice work, then the present mouse has a problem. It could be an incorrect driver. What model mouse? Did you get a CD with installation files for the mouse?
How recent is the problem? If quite recent might a System Restore help?

I didn't say it clearly. All the mice are working on other computers, just don't on this computer. Not sure when it started b/c it is a spare computer I seldom use but last time I used it a couple of months ago, everything was fine.

Try deleting all of the USB Controllers in Device Manager and reboot. After Windows gets through re-setting them all back up, try a known-good USB mouse again.

If Doc's suggestion doesn't fix things, try using System Restore, it sounds like something has got corrupted.

Try this in safe mode if DOc's idea doesn't pan out.

Hi q99, n, I haven't fix it yet, actually haven't have time to deal with since I last posted on this thread. It is a spare comp I stored a my Mom's and haven't been there since. I'll update as soon as I have time to go over there (or until she complaints about me not visiting enough )

Tried that. After a reboot, the mouse worked for a second while the USB controllers are installing themselves back in. But then as soon as it said the mouse was installed and ready, it didn't work anymore. Strange.

This mouse is a known working one. But, yeah, did try another known working mouse, still the same. All other USB devices work on all the USB ports. So, it's kind of a mystery.
