kspeel--When did this start? If recently try a System Restore.
    Also http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx
And look into Event Viewer. http://www.windows7update.com/Window...nt-Viewer.html and post the info on the General tab from redball errors timestamped when the message appears.

Here is a pretty good article on using Event Viewer.
    http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7...-event-viewer/
The only thing missing is that in the "Level" column there are no icons of redball errors. The picture shows only Information icons. If you have Errors you will see the redball and the timestamp is in the next column to the right. Info on the Error is shown in the General tab when you double click on the Error.
I cannot understand what you mean by "been on vd rom 2000 " and "Also getting a search provider default,,saying it is corrupt" Perhaps some more detail would help.

However having said all that, if this is a used HD, it would seem it has many problems. It would be best to get a new HD or at least to wipe the old HD.

Sounds like the hard drive may be flaky/failing.

First thing I'd do is check it with the manufacturer's Hard Drive Diagnostic software. If it passes, then I'd run a chkdsk c: /r command next to make sure the file system is okay.

(If the hard drive is physically failing, there is no software that can 'fix' it).
