Command/DOS box
When I click on Start>Run>regedit or some other command. e. g. msconfig, a familiar black window opens.
If I type something else, e. g. <ipconfig>, the black box stays open for a second or less (there is no time to read a few lines seen there) and disappears.
What gives? Can it be repaired?

Launch a CMD (command) window first, and then run the ipconfig command:- Click Start > Run, type cmd and press [Enter].
- At the CMD prompt, type ipconfig /all and press [Enter].
- To close the CMD window, either click the [X] in the top right corner, or type exit and press [Enter].

Start > run > cmd and hit enter.
Now type in ipconfig.
Most items must be run in the dos box in this manner.

msconfig is not a DOS app, so it will open and the command window closes. That is no different from when you run ipconfig. The ipconfig runs, and the command window closes. THERE IS NOTHING TO BE REPAIRED.

Thank you all, guys!
Live and learn :-).
BTW, I am just curious: the bottom 2 lines in the black window (after IP address, etc.) read "Lease obtained.......Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:27:29 PM
Lease expire...........Saturday, November 28, 2009 8:27:25 PM"
What am I leasing? I hope, I don't have to renew my IP address on a weekly basis...

IP lease time depends on your DHCP server. As long as your system responds to the DHCP server, it should maintain the IP.

The lease time determines how long a specific computer will be assigned a specific IP.
