    Internet Explorer has encountered a problem

    I originally put this post under Windows XP in error.

    Windows XP Home SP2 / Internet Explorer 7
    I have been getting this message frequently IE 7 Has encountered a Problem and must shut down. There is also a send or don't send message. I have clicked both on different occasions. When I do that IE7 closes and my desktop icons all disappear and then come back most of the time. This happens when I open up files or something in my documents. Sometimes IE 7 is open and sometimes it is closed.
    In talking with various people I understand there might be a corrupt file. I was also told there is a free small program to run in order to fix this but after searching I cannot find anything.
    Can you please advise how I can fix this issue.

    First of all, get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes (you don't get any report from the System File Checker, it just silently replaces and corrupt or missing system files that it finds).

    I ran sfc / scannow and a DOS screen went by to fast to read and then nothing happened. I do not know if anything was repaired or not. I was not asked for the Windows Disk. I assume I will have to wait and see if the error message happens again.
    Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

    Hmmm, that's not right. Try "sfc /scannow" from the Command Prompt instead.

    I've just been through the entire process and sfc / scannow did NOT resolve my issue. I was getting hung apps all over the place on IE7 and OE. Good luck. I finally uninstalled IE&, and now I've "lost" outlook express. I hate computers!

    Coach17--I understand you now are back to IE6 so there is no longer a purpose in trying to fix IE7.
    stragf is having a similar problem with OE here. Perhaps some of that advice will help.

    I actually have not gone back to IE6. IE7 is still running. I am still getting the same message a few time a week. Internet Explorer has encountered an error.
    What would be my next step in trying to fix this?

    I appreciate any advice.

    Coach17--If I understand the situation you are still running IE7 and from time to time are getting a message that IE has encountered a problem. That message really does not help too much in diagnosing the problem. You just know you have a problem.
    The next time this happens, try Start|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer|System and look for red ball error icons dated with the time of the problem. Click on the red ball. The first screen will give some info on the error--probably not too helpful, but copy it and post here. Then click on the go.microsoft.com link in that window and you may get more info which might not only be easier to understand but may suggest a solution. Post that here, also if you wish.
    Also tell us just what you are doing at the time the error message occurs. Do you see any pattern--going to a specific site, running more than one instance of IE, trying to download, etc.?

    Jim, Thanks for your reply. I will do what you have suggested and see how it works out.
    I can tell you that this does not necessarily happen when I am using Internet Explorer. It can happen when I go to MY Pictures Folder or My Documents etc. There is no real rhime or reason as to when this can happen.

    I forgot to add previously, IE 7 is closed sometimes when this happens.

    Coach17--Try looking at Event Viewer first and let us know if you get more details.
    But do you mean you are getting the " IE 7 Has encountered a Problem and must shut down" error message even when IE 7 is not running? Event Viewer can also provide more details on the problems even when IE is not running.

    Yes IE7 does not have to be running to get this error. I cannot seem to copy or save the file Event Viewer. There is no where to save the file.
    Here are 4 error messages I see
    WPDMTP Deriver
    NTFS
    Service Control Manager
    CD

    Does any of this information help.

    Coach17--Not much to go on. (WPDMTP=Windows Portable Device Media Transfer Protocol, but unless that means something to you, let's not do anything about that yet.)
    I can copy the contents of all the error boxes in EventViewer (there actually are three if you follow the procedure I described above) by highlighting the text|Control+C then opening Notepad (or Wordpad), pasting by Control+V and saving the message by File|Save As. You can save it whereever you want using the "Save In" line. Or, even simpler, you can highlight the error message text|Control+C and paste the message directly into a post here using Control+V.
    Yes IE7 does not have to be running to get this error.
    That is pretty weird. If IE7 is not running, how can it be shut down because of a problem? (Not really asking you to answer this.) You could open Task Manager when this happens to see if iexplore.exe really is running. Look in the Image Name column.

    There is a "small program" that might help fix IE7 but I have no experience with it on IE7. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
