Are you using a firewall on either, or both, of the computes. If so try disabling it/them, and see if they can talk to each other then.
I'm a little behind you, will try the firewalls next.
My helpers have underestimated my confusion about networking. I didn't know I had to reset all the settings every time I unins./reins. the flaky NIC card. But when it's working, here they are. This is the old comp, Newmain. The General tab has the DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Did I leave anything out?

But I have established that the card is flaky because it keeps losing its MAC.
It's getting harder to find tutes of WIRED networking. Is there something online you would recommend when I have problems?
Will get to the firewalls next, but they've always been on, and set to let the LAN through.
The properties windows should not take that long. Do you have another network card to try?Quote:

Some kind of XP software problem. I already resolved it by restoring C: from a 2/18/2010 clone. But the one with the flaky card is the old comp, "Newmain." And I really think that's the issue. Financial problems, specifically unemployment, prevent my keeping extra parts around.Quote:

Haven't been in bridge mode since chucking the external router. I use a switch with a wired connection.

There are no new drivers, card is too old.
Can either of the PC's ping its own IP address successfully? Can either of them ping the router? If you have a spare ethernet card, I'd replace the ancient one to see if that fixes the issue.
They can each ping themselves. Bear can ping the router; Newmain, the old one can't. And it's also lost the internet now. I started suspecting the NIC card, but wanted to be sure before I spent the money, as I'm unemployed.
I'll mark this resolved temporarily till I can get a card.
