As per my other thread: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...d.php?t=249105 It comes back. But this time clearing the browser caches doesn't help. Though, if I use google.co.uk, the "Cached" and "Similar" links are still there. Any idea?

The link below might bring you some light on what is happening in Google:
http://www.ghacks.net/2011/05/07/goo...-layout-style/
I really hate it. I use the cached pages A LOT. Have yet to find a solution. Unlike last time it happened, clearing the browser caches doesn't change it back this time.
I understand and have no problem with Google trying out new things, that's how they can improve things. But the way they do it really sucks big time.
#1) Fine, try a new layout, but why doesn't it say something up front? A lot of users like me are ambushed by the sudden change and think that there's something wrong w/ our browsers and/or computers.
#2) If this is an experiment, you'd think that they want feedbacks. The easiest way to get feedback statistics is to offer a button to change it back and watch how many people keep the new one and how many people switch it back. Yahoo mail does that. Not only that there is no way to change it back, there is no way that I know of that I can tell Google my opinion on it.
I've heard that Google only hires the smartest people. The way I see it, they are not that smart after all.
Must be why they only have 23,000+ employees, run over one million servers in data centers around the world, processes over one billion search requests and about twenty-four petabytes of user-generated data daily, and made a mere 8.5 Billion$ profit (USD) in 2010. :)
The U.S. Federal gov't employs way more people, manages a lot more things and rakes in many billions more money, but that doesn't make them the smartest people on earth. We all know that dumb decisions are made daily by these people.
Not to "dis" Google, but the way they handle this is just dumb, plain and simple and I don't care how much $ they make. I think I have a very good point in my post. They could have handled this differently. Again, like Yahoo mail, there is a prominent button to switch it back to the "Classic" mode. It's just as simple as that.
If we measure intelligent by $ one makes, I suppose only 1 or 2% of people on earth are smart b/c majority of the world’s wealth is in the hands of only 1 -2% of the population. And, it would mean that Einstein was a pretty dumb guy as although he was not poor but he was nowhere near being rich.
Perhaps IT IS b/c Google makes so much $, they figure they are invincible right now and they DON'T CARE about their customers anymore. They are saying, "Hey, Google is #1, you get what WE give you and if you don't like it, go to the other guy." You know what? Google! You can keep making those billions but Bing is my default search now!
No disrespect if you do work for Google, I certainly do not mean EVERY Google employee is dumb. I really mean it for Google the company, not any one individual.
I see. So, Google should now confer with you before making any further decisions?
#1) Well, you'd be right if it is just me. By all means, don't change anything to please JUST ME. But it's not just me. "Goggle" it ... wait, please "Bing" it instead. Tons of people are complaining.Quote:
I see. So, Google should now confer with you before making any further decisions?
#2) Any company who cares about customer satisfaction, yeah, they do reasearch what their customers like and dislike and, yeah, sometimes it involves conferring with the customers before changing. Many many companies enlist beta testers to gather feedbacks before their products are released to the general public. And, yeah, many of these beta testers are, well, just their regular customers.
A) you missed my point, apparently Goggle is doing this as a experiment, so, like I said,Will it kill Goggle to just give thier customers a choice on the layout? Really, it is THAT HARD!!!!!!! I may not be smart enough to work for Goggle but, really, I KNOW that it is not that hard at all.Quote:

B) Also,And, if they do care about their customers, why couldn't they have a button there saying, "Hey, do you like this new layout, submit your feedback here." Again, is it REALLY THAT HARD to do????!!!! No, it is not hard to do, especially, condering the fact that, as you pointed out, they are such a huge company w/ such huge resourses at their disposal. The reason they don't offer it is b/c they don't care!Quote:
Not only that there is no way to change it back, there is no way that I know of that I can tell Goggle my opinion on it.
Google (like most everything else) gets worse and worse :(
It is their company. They can do pretty much whatever they like.
If you think you can do better, no one is stopping you. :)
I think what SpywareDr means is that he feels you pain:eek:
I work for a software company and we too make decissions that we know someone is going to hate... And we do this knowing they might go shopping with our competitors and we'd loose large amounts of money with annual renewal fees...
True. You can't please everybody. While many users hate the new layout, I am sure many users love it. I am disappointed more b/c of the fact that I am forced to abandon Google, my long-time favorite search engine, b/c its search results no longer match my search habit.
Anyway, the real purpose of this thread is to find a solution, not to complaint. So, how does Google identify my computer to force my IE8 to use the new layout?
Apparently, only certain individual browsers will get this new layout. For example, all my other computers are still seeing the old layout. In this computer, only IE sees the new layout. When I use Chrome, it is still seeing the new layout.
We have established that they are not using cookies anymore for this. IP? I have clearing the cache and connected to another IP using my 3G connection. It doesn't work. So, they are not tracking it with my IP either.
I’ve uninstalled Google Toolbar and checked that there is no more Google related add-on. So, it’s not via add-on either.
This leads me to speculate that they must have modified my IE8 somehow.
It could be a registry entry or IE add-on. Have you tried running IE with no add-ons?
The only Google related add-on I had was the Google Toolbar which I uninstalled.
If they track my IE via the registry, mmm, it'll be a tough case to crack.
They have had this new layout for months now. (Or is this yet another disgusting change??)
I ask because i havent noticed anything different in the last week or so..
Yes, they have been doing it for a while but it is not a "gobal" change, so not everyone will get it at the same time.
I thought everyone had this new design now (for a few months anyway)
Its horrible,im glad the original search still works!
www.google.com/custom
Dude, I've heard about that infamous layout w/ the huge white space on the right but have never got it myself. Don't know how it appears on your end but it does have the "cached" and "similar" links that I need. I too don't like the silly dead space on the right but will give this layout a try.
The good thing about it is that I can get there by simply adding the "/custom" at the url. See, Google, you can do the same thing with all the other layouts you are trying out ... just give your users a choice by mean of a different url, it really is not that much to ask, then you may test all kinds of things you want and we complaint that much.
(There is another thread here talking about the missing "Search within Results" function. Thx god I don't use that feature that much.)
Yes thats the URL i just posted above for you :)Quote:

Good old basic I have used for years.

Train, on my browser, that is the same as the new layout that I stucking with ... no "cached" link.
OK, I grab the cache on the link if the link does not work after I Google what I want.
Just my way of doing things.
Googled Cass scenic Railway.
Note the cached link behind the www.cassrailroad.com url.
That is what I use if the link does not work.
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/att...4&d=1307468639
That's what has been removed in the new layout :(
My main use of the cached link was where I wanted to highlight the search terms. I'm finding of late that it is a waste of time because all I get is "These terms only appear in links pointing top this page: xxx xxx". Which makes it about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard  There's a good article on that here:
http://www.webworkshop.net/google-an...und-links.html
Yeah, the "cached" link is no longer there for those of us whom Google forces to use the new layout.
I use the cached pages a lot not only b/c the keywords are highlighted, but also b/c for my job I do a lot of research for legacy products, technologies, etc. Often times, those info can only be found in those cached pages.
Maybe the wayback machine can help or the other sources listed can help out then.

Thank you, it's good to know.
When i goto www.google.com i see cached and similar links as in this exampleQuote:

You do not see Cached/similar links on that page i listed falcon??
This looks nice (I see cached links here also)
www.incywincy.com
No, with the default www.google.com address, I am force to use their new layout w/o the "cached" and "similar" links on this computer using IE8 (still get them using Chrome but I prefer IE).
Using the www.goole.com/custom url, I get the "cached" and "similar" links BUT I don't get the "Images", "News", "Maps", "Shopping", etc. filter links. I just can't win w/ Google
Whats the URL you get when you do a search on IE8??
Sounds pretty crappy!
This is the url I get searhing virtualdr.com
http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&h...w=1259&bih=617
Yours for the same search is
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...=virtualdr.com
Neither of them have the cached links on the page.
Using your links, I do see the cached links. Using FF 4.01 and IE 9 .
I have a idea that you have a .js in your temp internet folder that is blocking them.
Use Ccleaner and TFC by Oldtimer , to dump everything in the temp folders..
Thank you but I pretty much have given up on this. This is a company issued computer and IT dept doesn't like us to install any softwares other than those on the list.
When i goto your first link Falcon (http://www.google.com/search?sclient...&bih=617&cad=h) and i still see cached links....
Hmmmm What happens if you disable scripting on the browser?
I dont see howe they can block CACHED links its on GOOGLES site!!
But if he disables scripts and the links are there then that may be a sign they are somehow!
If you are referring to my company's IT dept, I seriously doubt that. This is my laptop for field work. It's not on the company's domain, and no one has access to it, physically or remotely, but me.
It is definitely Goggle's doing. Other users have encountered the same thing. It seems to me that they used to use a simple cookie to identify my IE8 before but now they are using something more permanent. It identifies my IE8 and directs it to use specific servers at Google which display the search result page using the new layout. That's why not every browser experiences it.
I may try the scripting things later this week but to tell you the truth, Google is getting worse and worse to me, especially after reading this thread, http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...d.php?t=249256, and I don't think I am going to use Google much anymore. Now I am using Yahoo.
Sadly Yahoo is getting worse and worse also!
They are just about to change thier design AND BLOCK ALMOST ALL BROWSERS (Except the latest crap (I think so they can montor people better))
Yahoo Japan WAS EXCELLENT until a few weeks ago when they started screwing up thier network also! (I have an email account on there and now i cant access it because they have added some stupid CAPTHA to be able to login (And i cant read it))
I guess its no surprise,THEY ARE OWNED PARTIALLY BY THE IDIOTS RUNNING YAHOO USA UNFORTUNETLY :(
Oh well, like they say, there is no free lunch ... this is what we pay for these "free" service ... so, after all, I guess we can't complaint too much unless we are willing to pay real $$ for a search service.
