Spybot Search and Destroy has faulty updater?
Every time I download Spybot S&D the updater will eventually 'break' for lack of a better word. I can uninstall and reinstall it. Redownload it. Doesn't matter. Eventually the autoupdater is gonna c**p out. Anybody have any idea whats up with that?
Now if I want it updated I go to MajorGeeks.com and use the manual updater.

Do you mean that it freezes when you try and retrieve the update? Try downloading it from a different location. I usually use the US location.

To use a different download site:
Open Spybot Search and Destroy. After clicking the button that says "Search for Updates" you will see 5 items near the top of the window, "Search for Updates", "Download Updates", UniDo(Europe), "Show Log" and "Help". Next to UniDo(Europe) you will see a "down" arrow. Click the "down" arrow and you will see download site choices (2 in Europe, 2 in USA and 1 in Australia).

I also have problems with the updater at work, although it works fine at home. I can't even choose a different location. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help, I guess I would have to remove some registry keys.

I've read that the reason it freezes is because the default download site is either off line or so slow it may as well be off line... then when no immediate download occurs spybot freezes.
Usil..
it could be that when you intitially open the search for update page that something is stopping spybot from sending or recieving data. Since there's no option to choose where that initial "search for new updates" is downloading from (only the actual update download has that option) perhaps something else is stopping the check and spybot freezes up. Try bypassing your firewall while you use spybot and see if that helps.

Does anyone know if there is a registry hack to change the default download site to one of the USA ones? This would certainly help me, and might help a31chris, if it could force it to a different download site.
...this one goes to 11...

Of course, silly me! I didn't have the proxy filled in. It was pretty well hidden. Anyway, filled it in, tried downloading and it started freezing like Chris said. That happened using European sites. Than I tried USA site ,and it worked.
Thanks Fink!

It works at first, but then the updater wont work. It wont let me choose a different mirror. When I click on the download mirror button, it 'clicks' but no drop down menu or anything pops up. It says 'no mirror chosen' or something to that effect.

Chris, are you trying to do it from work? Are you sitting behind a proxy?

No I'm on direct connect with a modem. I did have the CWShredder parasite. I heard they've been known to disable Anti-spyware programs. Could this be the case?

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't want to find out
Did you get rid of the parasite?

Yeah I got rid of it about a month ago. It hijacked my IE homepage and showed a pic of Santa doing his business down a chimney. I think the post is still here where someone, or several someone's helped me.
