My Norton Anti Virus 2003 has suddenly quit working properly. When I booted my computer around 8:00 PM this evening, I noticed that the familiar yellow Icon was missing from the System Tray (where the clock is).

I double clicked on the Norton’s shortcut on my Desktop and the program would not open! I continued to double click until the program finally opened and the status window informed me that my E-mail Scanning was not working. I opened Options and selected my E-mail (Outlook Express) and this temporarily resolved the issue. I then rebooted my system and the same thing happened again. No Icon in the System Tray and after opening the scanning software (finally), the status window informed me that the E-mail scanning was not working.

I updated Norton’s Anti Virus and ran a scan; all came out just fine (as expected). I again rebooted my computer and alas, no Icon in the System Tray but the status window did show my E-mail scanning was working.

No new software has been installed lately except for a very minor update to Macromedia Flash Player to version 7.0.19.0 (yesterday).

How can I resolve this issue? Norton’s Anti Virus 2003 now opens ever so slowly and AFTER it opens, the Icon appears in the System Tray. Again, but for emphasis, there is a checkmark by show the auto-protect Icon in the Tray (under Options). My subscription for Live Update does not expire until August 2004. Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
