    Generic Host Process Windows Shutdown

When I start my computer, and my desktop comes up, I open Internet Explorer. I then get a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close" error. I also get a box saying this system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM with a countdown timer of 1 minute. Help

    Same

Now when I try to type this thread, the error comes up. When the System Shutdown box comes up, it has this message:

Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly. Help

Yes, apparently this patch cures it:

But the fact that this is the 3rd thread on this today suggests that somethings doing the rounds that exploits the vulnerability.

    Update your definitions everyone!!

I've gotten 4 calls on this one already this morning!
Most of them can't get their machines to boot to apply the patch.

It's gonna be a busy day.

    Hope this helps.

Mine started after midnight last night. I formatted and it is OK.

I did not apply the patch, and it is still OK.

Moms PC not so lucky, it is rebooting ONLY AFTER NET CONNECTION she is on a dialup. RPC error.

I changed the RECOVERY tab option, so that her PC does not reboot, but instead it restarts the service.

    Go to control panel>admin tools>services>RPC.

Change from "restart computer" to "restart service".

I have the patch downloaded and will try on moms PC in morning.

It took down my antivirus last night. I also lost task bar and ability to move files or copy and paste.

Lost a bit of data, darn!
    I read your e-mail

To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a computer.

    Go to control panel>admin tools>services>RPC.

    On the recovery tab,

Change from "restart computer" to "restart service".
