Removable Hard Drive Trays
I would like to put a couple removable HD trays on my PC for backuping.
However, I am not too thrilled by the selection of these trays - they all seem to be "brand-X" chinese products.
Should I be concerned? Should I try to find something by a top shelf company if there even are such products? Does Adaptek make them?
Thanks in advance.

Wow, I never heard of Kinwin or Vantec, however, it looks like their products are top notch.
I guess I now know how to go "high-line!"

Since this is really not much more than a box within a box, some cables, a led or two and a couple of interface connectors, I wouldn't worry about "brand X" products...in fact, the chinese make some pretty good stuff nowadays....including a lot of motherboards (Taiwan). Mainland China even makes Audi cars...
I've used some brand X removable trays for years...no problem.

Yes I have a nice Taiwanese model here-- the box clearly states "we are the best" I think its the company's motto.
make sure you get a model with a decent fan in the "inside your computer" part (sorry can't think of the word!)... otherwise 7200rpm drives are known to get a little too hot
I'd think most 5400 rpms are ok.
Quality isn't a huge issue-- its just a bunch of plastic with an electronic connector. Do you go out of your way to buy a certain brand of printer cable? same thing in my opinion
"Lian Li supply the most professional RH series of mobile Hard Disc Rack to the international market place. Under the strict quality control procedure and stable quality, all ranges are becoming the most favored by the consumers, and already became the market leader for the mobile rack in the recent year."
Anyway-- it works.

Boys, I am daring to ask a long held question, I always felt was too stupid to ask: what is a removeable drive, i.e. it is not external, its not internal, but what actually is it, what can you do with it? Thanks Noid

noid,
It's a 5.25 inch drive bay that allows you to put a normal IDE Hard Disk into it - in other words it allows you to swap what would otherwise be internal hard drives without any fuss or muss.
Now I've got a question - where the hell do you buy the things in the UK? I've looked all over the place, and I just can't find anyone that supplies them. Have our great leaders declared them illegal or something?
Nick.

If your a fixit tech,it comes in very handy to take it to a job with diagnostic etc. programs on it to help solve problems on a clients PC. And if you have files that are very sensitive in your business, using a removable to secure these files in a remote, secure location can save a lot of grief in case of fire or other catastrophe...

Don't get the plastic ones, get ones with a metal frame, and aluminum tray. Thermaltalk makes a good one that actually cools the drive and works.
i had several of THIS ONE go bad on me and cause errors it seems that after much use at all the plastic loosens up and allows the drive to slide forward enough to make the connection intermittent. This is all caused by the operation of the drive.
I had several replaced that when the replacements failed I figured it was not worth the shipping to keep replacing non working junk for soon to be non working junk.
As far as using them, I do use them quite a bit, I bring my home machine's hdd in the rack to work almost once a week. It helps allot with doing work at home.
just my $.02 worth, hope it helps.
it's just a jump to the left....
