optinal software update from Microsoft...
There is a new optinal software update from Microsoft, "Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB891122)".
Could someone please explain to me in plain language the reason for this update.
I use Windows Media Player 10.

It's a DRM.. Digital Rights Managment update. If you're buying (leasing) licensed media (films, music) via WMP then it's an update to ensure the process will not only work properly in terms of issuing and storing the licence info but it allows the seller to check to see if you have the latest DRM updates.
Is it necessary? Probably, if you intend to purchase these licenses online using Windows media player.
