Please help remove CSW Malware and WxBug.EXE (Adware.Wheaterbug.A)
Here are the specifics of my Dell PC:
. O/S: Windows XP Home SP2
. Browser: IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
. Internet Connection: Cable
. Spybot
Here are my symptoms:
1. Every time I open an IE browser, I am automatically redirected to about:blank
I have run the Spybot scan numerous times and cannot remove the following:
CoolWWWSearch.Feat2DLL 31 entries
CoolWWWSearch.HomeSearch 2 entries
CoolWWWSearch.SearchKlick 9 entries
I attempted to use CWShredder to remove these entries, but was only able to remove the CSW.HomeSearch entry (but they immediately came back).
Likewise, I have run the BitDefender Online scan numerous times and continue to get the following:
C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE=>wise0008 Detected with: Adware.Wheaterbug.A
C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE=>wise0008 Disinfection
failed
C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE=>wise0008 Deleted
C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE Updated failed
I also ran the Housecall at TrendMicro, which found nothing.
I was unable to run the Panda ActiveScan and eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner because I was immediately asked to connect to the Internet via a dial-up connection (even though I have a cable connection) - evidently, the connection was not detected.
I have run Adaware, which has eliminated all adware threats.

Hi and welcome to VDr forums .
Can you please do the following.
===============
Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iemz.exe] C:\WINDOWS\iemz.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
O16 - DPF: {10000000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\windows\system32\cm.exe
Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".
===============
Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:
files...
C:\WINDOWS\iemz.exe
C:\windows\system32\cm.exe
-
Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".
-
Reboot.
===============
To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:
Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:
1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.
-
Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.
===============
After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Do I need to use HJT to fix anything else based on the log file above?
Overall, the performance and reliability of the browser appears to have improved markedly. However, when I ran the Spybot scan - I still have the following entries which can't seem to be removed:
CoolWWWSearch.Feat2DLL 31 entries
CoolWWWSearch.HomeSearch 2 entries
CoolWWWSearch.SearchKlick 9 entries
Any advice on how to remove these items - or should I post to another forum on this one? Thanks in advance for the help.

Download CWShredder 2.15 from here. Run it and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.
===============
Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
===============
Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.
Run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
==
Run spybot again too and see if it still flags those entries.

Unfortunately, I'm now experiencing a new issue. Everytime that I click on a link or type a URL in the address line, a Dial-up connection window pops up on the screen. When I click the "X" to close the box, it defaults to "Work Offline" and I have to click File...and uncheck "Work Offline" to continue. Any thoughts on this one?
CWShredder did not identify or eliminate any objects when ran.
ewido identified and eliminated 52 objects when ran in SAFE mode.
However, when I rebooted the PC and reran Spybot - the following entries were still present:
CoolWWWSearch.Feat2DLL 31 entries
CoolWWWSearch.HomeSearch 2 entries
CoolWWWSearch.SearchKlick 9 entries
I have included the log files below. I really appreciate your continued help and and welcome any additional information/suggestions that you can offer to attempt to salvage this PC without having to reformat and reinstall everything. Thanks.

Go here http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and download, unzip and run the Registry Search Tool. Type CoolWWWSearch in the dialog box. Let it run and after a few minutes, a prompt will appear. Click OK to write the results to Notepad and post them here.
I am not sure what is going on with the dial-up dialogue you are getting now. Never heard of that happening before.

Good news is I resolved the I managed to resolve the dial-up dialogue box by going into IE Tools...Internet Options...Click the Connections tab and select the "Never Dial A Connection" radio button.
Here is the RegSrch entry output:

When I ran the BitDefender scan overnight, I also still received the following:

failed

C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE Updated failed
Do you know how I can disinfect (or remove if possible) the WxBug.EXE? Thanks.

Thanks again for your help. I have completed the tasks that you described above, but the CWS entries still exist.
I went ahead and uninstalled AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) to get rid of the issue detected by BitDefender described in my previous post.
Here is the detail from the Spybot report - can I go in SAFE mode and just delete these files manually one-by-one, or will this action eliminate potentially create other issues? In other words, are these O/S files that have been corrupted by CSW or can they be completely deleted with no averse affect to the O/S or associated prorgrams (i.e., IE)?

I uninstalled and reinstalled Spybot, still can't get rid of the following:
CoolWWWSearch.Feat2DLL 31 entries
CoolWWWSearch.HomeSearch 2 entries
CoolWWWSearch.SearchKlick 9 entries
Any other ideas? Thanks.

Did any of the above in my last post help? From your #9 post, you can manually delete those entries.

I don't think your last post helped. The CSW entries were there. I went into SAFE mode and deleted all of the entries manually from my #9 post to eliminate the entries identified by Spybot. I believe that everything is finally clean - thanks for the help Crunchie. Here is my latest HJT logfile:

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!
===============
Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:
Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.
Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.
Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.
[color=blue]Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.
Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.
Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.
Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.
Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.
Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.
Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.
Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.
