Open Windows media player, go to View, Options format types and reselect all file format types again. Apply and ok then close. Doing this will revert mplayer to default back providing you disable the Hp player.....better yet, dump the Hp player?

To answer the posts above, I did use the same CD, Rog. I don't want to get rid of the HP player, Netfish. I was trying to get the Windows CD Player, not Media Player to be the default. I decided to choose WinAmp as my default by checking the box that associates it with audio cd's, and now after a couple reboots, everything is fine and the HP program is not acting up again.

Winamp's pretty cool, I like it, tho it takes some getting used to. Watch out for conflicts with RealPlayer if you install or update it after Winamp, it likes to usurp Winamp's .pls (play list) and .m3u file associations.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted out one way or another.

Just when you think everything is going well... I've discovered that anytime I use the Hewlett Packard "Media Rack" (which includes the HP CD player as well as a wav player and a system mixer) the HP CD player resumes as the default cd player, overtaking my WinAmp settings. Because I use the Media Rack often, I had to figure out a way to work around this. Now I've always known that the HP CD player didn't have many options within its menus and I was sure that the player didn't have a file association option, so I never really bothered to check the menus during this whole time. Well I decided to take another look and I found an option called "auto play." It gives you a choice of either the HP player or the Windows CD player, and the HP player was checked. This is apparently why the HP player kept coming back as my default. I have now switched the setting to the Windows CD player and so far everything is fine.

I'm now back to the problem where it opens up minimized in the tray. I made the changes to registry, Rog, but it didn't work. At least part of the problem is solved... I hope!
