Show Desktop Icon on Task Bar

I have Windows XP SP2. I would like to have the "Show Desktop" icon on the task bar by the start menu. The issue is this, when I right click on the task bar by the start menu and then click on Toolbars and then check show desktop I do not get an icon. On the right side of the task bar I get another toolbar and when I click on that I get a drop down menu of my desktop and not the actual desktop. At work I do have an icon by the start menu and it shows the actual desktop when I click it.
I would appreciate any help with this.
