linux run from windows

hello,

i currently use knoppix live cd linux as my hard drive hates me and wont let me partition. i could use a linux distribution that operates as a windows application (apparantly). can anyone recommend a good distro? also i once discovered a linux distro that partitions your hard drive for you to install as a 2nd os. i have no idea which linux this was. anybody know of anything similar to this?

Darn near ALL the current major distros have partitioning capability. Which version of windows have you tried to partition this drive with however? It doesn't sound to me like Linux is necessarily going to cure whatever is wrong with your system...

Personally, I uses SuSe Linux, and it has all the expected utilities, and a GUI that will be fairly familiar to any Windows user. I highly recommend it. But, I'm still sceptical about your present problem.

I agree with shiva, most Linux distro's include a partioning utility such as QTParted.

Can you shed anymore information on this at all? Any error's, etc?

You may be thinking of Mandriva (Mandrake). This has an option to resize your windows partition graphically using a sliding bar.

I think most modern distros have a similar option, but I'm guessing Mandriva is still the easiest.

I would say that both SuSE and mandrake tie in the user friendly respect..
SuSE just comes with a hole **** load of stuff which is nice for those dial-up users

I would recommend doing a low level format on the drive..
If you can't lose that windows partition, then I recommend using norton ghost or true image to make a image of that drive and put that image onto another HDD or something, then after the low level format, partition the drive and then the windows partition back onto a smaller partition; I hope that makes sense..
