Appreciate the information, and glad it worked for you, but that isn't a solution to the generic XP problem, but rather a solution to a "shared printer" monitor problem.
In my case, the printer is (was) plugged directly into the XP machine, not another network machine, and this method didn't work.
But, it very likely will help someone else. In the meantime, I've gotten rid of the printers in question and am waiting to buy a new Epson photo model shortly.
