SpywareGuard Update?
Hello. I'm using SpywareGuard 2.2 with definitions dated 1/22/04. I get the same prompt each time I check for updates: "No updates available. You have the latest SpywareGuard definitions." How can this software maintain a real-time scanning engine with definitions that are 17 months old? Did I miss something? www.Javacoolsoftware.com still has SpywareGuard 2.2 available for download (free) at its website, and politely asks for donations. All comments welcomed. (Dell 1.8G, 512 MB, XP, High-speed cable, Zone Alarm Pro 5, eTrust EZ Armor Anti-virus, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, Spy Sweeper, Ad-Aware SE, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, A-squared, X-Cleaner, and SpywareGuard)

Re:Having problems with SpywareGuard Updates
Hi amoeba,
The reason for less frequent updates with SpywareGuard is that much of its detection abilities are heuristics in nature. (Basically this means it doesn't need a specific signature for every spyware it catches, simply an overall pattern or approach-used, which it can identify and then trigger off of.) So, SpywareGuard works for many of the newer versions of the same spyware installers even without adding "signatures" for them.
An update is made when there are new items coming out that are not detected that way.
