liam858--Not 100% sure I understand what you are seeing when you right click My Computer|Properties and see "the properties dialog box ... in "old skool" mode". Maybe it has been too long (one year) since I have WinXP (new PC)--used to have Win98. When I do that I get a WinXP System Properties box.
What are you looking for?
Have you tried right clicking on a blank spot on the Taskbar|Properties|Start Menu tab? Are you still offered the two options?

Sorry Jim i meant to post a screenshot, i only mentioned My computer|properties because that is when i realised the visual style was Classic and not the standard XP "Luna" style, and when i went to Display properties the dropdown menu only shows Windows Classic Style.
I've tried to restore the luna theme from the XP CD through command prompt and no luck, also sfc had no joy either.
Thanks for replying.

Try right-clicking on desktop itself, click Appearance tab on Display Properties menu...the DDmenu under "Windows and Buttons" should have both options. My computer is the same as yours if I go to My Computer/Properties, but going the desktop route gives both options! Go figure.

Liam, There's a possible fix at the link below on line 187(right column) to download - "Restore Luna Theme".

Thanks for the help guys.
I managed to get the theme/visual style back after a reboot and through command prompt with my XP CD.
FIX:
Basically Start|Run|cmd|Type the drive letter that the xp disc is in, in my case E: hit Enter, then i386 and hit Enter, so you end up with the syntax E:\i386 then type "expand Luna.ms_c:\temp" and the visual style is taken from the disc and put into C: then opened the file to display the VS and then placed it in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes.
