New Updates For IE 5.5 And Outllook
I have Installed these updates Under Win95 B OSR2 running IE 5.5 SP2. They are Tested by me for Win 95 as stable and functional. Since Support for 95 has been gone for a while now... I think it's important to have others who test and run patches and updates to make sure we all stay protected as best we can!
August 1 Update to IE 5.5
Outlook Express Running IE 5.5 SP2 June 29th 2004 This Update at this link says it is for melenium edition but it also works in 98FE 98SE and 95B all running IE 5.5 SP2!
The Security Bulletin Here says it is for the Windows 98 family as well but somehow it got left off the download page. Anyways I have Installed it and tested it in Win 95B so feel secure and confident to install it on your Win 95B machine Running IE 5.5 SP2!!

If you're concerned about MS's lack of support for IE in Win95, don't forget that OPERA will install on Win95 without a hitch, and OPERA is updated regularly.
FIREFOX requires at least IE4.0 before it will run on Win95 -- this has always troubled me. Supposedly FF is immune to the problems that plague IE, but with FF's requirement of a foundation of IE, who knows?

Do I need the Outlook Express update if I don't use it?

Chris,
I would install the update but you certainly can go to Microsofts site and see why the update is critical. Many updates are required even if you don't use the features as the programs are integrated into windows.
Jerry4Dos,
I never could find the system requirements for Opera. Therefore I have never used it. The Minimum ram requirement for FireFox however is 64 megs. I pretty much figured if you got 64 megs, hehe, you're not running windows 95. I only install 95 on systems (notebooks) that only have 16 megs of (proprietary) ram and a small hard drive (under a gig)! FireFox System Requirements

Hi JAL:
System requirements for OPERA are here:

Here's some more on using FIREFOX in Win95, although Win95 is "officially" not supported:

Jerry,
Thanks for the update and link.
Opera seems a lot like ie system requirement wise. I may have to give it a shot. I like ie 4 and ie 5 though for many of the benifits to the os you get. active desktop and quick launch shortcuts from pop out menus...etc...
The only think I don't like with IE 5.5 is it's swiss cheese security. 3+ years later and it still has mass exploits. IE 6 seems to be no better if not worse as far as security goes.
12 megs of hard drive space is fairly small so trying it is probably not much of a penalty!
I listen to Kim Komando and she recommends Opera and Firefox on her radio show. I just found IE 5.5 to do everything I want to do! But now that I know the requirements I will give it a try! Thanks Again!

Well, I am now using the Opera browser regularly and pretty much only use IE 5.5 on sites I go to that don't support the Opera browser.
I was wondering if this thread could be made into a sticky because it has links to what may be the last MS released IE 5.5 sp2 patches that work with 95. And I find myself hunting this thread up after system restores and such to get the patches because I forget the names, or can't remember M$ cumulative patch X86EXE38a9s786098uy90879997Resistance is Futile!*(*)7898898. So I just usually look for this thread and go download the IE 5.5 updates.

Thanks Murf!! Would you mind if I let the sysop of the 95isAlive know of your site and maybe if he could put a link to it there? Or maybe you could get ahold of him yourself. Whichever.
Thanks again Murf!!!

Ok Murf. The ones you have listed now are 'critical' updates correct? I never can find them as executables on the M$ site. Yeah, you can still goto 'tools' and Windows updates on IE and it will scan your system and give you the critical updates for 95. I guess we should be thankful for that huh? But its just a matter of time before they won't even do that anymore.
