    Cable Internet -----> DSL

    Planning to switch from Cable Internet to DSL. Is it worth it? DSL is only $15 a month while Cable Internet is $40 a month.

    Theoretically cable is faster than DSL, but if you are in an apartment building, for example, where lots of people are hooked up to the same cable company you might find it deadly slow after dinner time in peak hours. Problem that doesn't affect DSL so much.
    DSL speeds also depend on how far you are from the main phone switch where your phone line is physically connected to the main optical line. I'm at 4.6 km from the Bell Canada building (actual physical distance along the phone wire from my house to the building) by road I'm 3.7 km. So I'm at the lower limit of the bandwidth, I still get download speeds of 2.4 Mbps and upload speeds of 640 kbps which is a hell of a lot better than my 56k modem could supply.
    I also don't have access to cable, people who like TV around here all have those lovely little satellite dishes, we have a set of "rabbit ears" and watch the 4 channels that we can, maybe 4 hours a week.
    Check this out, I think it is a little dated but it's an ok read.
    DSL vs, Cable
    Just trying to give others a friendly hand.
