TCP/IP Configuration

I formatted my notebook and installed win xp sp1 currently. I want to create a network between my desktop as a server and the notebook as a client. They have been previously hooked up successfully in both wired and wireless network and worked well untill I formatted the notebook.
The problem is that I can't find TCP/IP properties which should be in the 'General' tab of 'Local Area Connection' icon. I can find it in the desktop but not in the newly formatted notebook.
Please tell me what to do.

Hi Pabel,

That isn't a normal behavor. In Windows XP, TCP/IP is the preferred protocol. It's automatically installed, can't be uninstalled, and is used for all default networking functions. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the network card on the notebook and see if it creates the TCP/IP protocol. If not, then try these instructions:

1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
7. Restart the computer.

But when I open the network properties I can only see two tabs, Authentication and Advanced...
Do u think reinstalling Win XP will help though I formatted the whole HDD yesterday?

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter? Go to Device Manager and expand the Network adapters. Click on the network adapter and choose uninstall. Then click Scan for Hardware changes and see if that will work.

Well, I again formatted the C: Drive and reinstalled Win XP as I again had some problems in the fresh copy of XP. The TCP/IP properties were there.
