    Memory Problem

I use Win 98 in a IBM 400 MHz aptiva computer. I am having a memory
problem with one program. WordPerfect 5.1 for windows. The program
works fine until I try to use the spell checker. Then I get an insufficient
memory message. If I exit the program I cannot start it again until I
reboot. I get a share code warning message.

I have installed Zone Alarm, Spy Bot, Ad Aware, as new programs on
this computer and also run Norton SystemWorks 2004. System resource
    fall as low as 32%.

How do I fix this. Does taking programs off the start-up list correct this,
or do I have some other problem?

    Thanks, Jerry

If your system resources are low(50-60% or less) after a cold start or a reboot, then press Ctrl-Alt-Del on the Desktop, close all programs except Explorer, Systray, and your firewall(if you use one), and recheck the resources.
If they get into the 80-90% range, then run WordPerfect.
If it runs ok without the insufficient memory message, then you had too many programs running in the background.
You can prevent them from running at startup by going to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK, click Startup, uncheck the boxes for all unnecessary programs, click OK, and restart the computer.

If the memory message still appears after doing the above, then make sure that Windows is managing the virtual memory, and there's at least 0.5-1.0 GB of free HD space.

How much memory did you say that this system has?

May I suggest going to CodeStuff Starter and download Starter? This program is adware and spyware free and what it does, is shows you any Start-Up programs, but the best thing it does, that it let's you delete any Start-Up programs that could be a memory hogger. Try it out. I uses it for about every computer I come into contact with. But don't uses this program and start deleting programs that you are not sure of.

Ad-aware was a resource sucker on my computer and can cause problems so I uninstalled it. Could be your problem.

I would not recommend uninstalling Ad-aware. It's a very powerful spyware removal tool.
If it's consuming a lot of your system's resources, then just prevent it from running at startup, and manually run it to remove spyware.

I cannot seem to be able to stop Ad aware from loading. There is no
option in the program. It does not appear when I run msconfig nor in the
start up menu under programs. How can I stop it from loading?
control-alt delete does not show it either.

    Thanks, Jerry

Look in start up, see if it matches this.

when I go on the internet how do I start it up.

    Thanks, Jerry

Click on the 'gear' icon and then the StartUp tab and you will see.

    Hi jerry hillman,
A I understand it WordPerfect is a real resource hog. And you have to remember it "hangs on" even after you have exited the program. I have only 64M ram on this Win 98 Machine so I guess I have learned to adapt. Either reboot, or run somthing like AnalogX MaxMem which will clear it.

(the edit: I'm running WordPerfect 9 okay)

Sounds interesting. What is AnalogX MaxMem and where do I get.
    Is it a download?

    Thanks, Jerry

Nah those type programs usually end up causing more problems than they are worth.

Hqave you stopped any programs from starting by using msconfig/ startup tab?
If you did it would be to your advantage.
Stop some of those resource hogs from starting at bootup is always worth while.

    Dear jerryhillman,
    MaxMem is at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system.htm
With due respect to Train, I have found that MaxMem helps, and AnalogX programs (freeware) deposit very little to the registry, so it will uninstall cleanly if you find it doesn't help. Train's suggestion about using msconfig is bang on as usual; it does help if a lot of other programs aren't running when you use WordPerfect. If you have WordPerfect Office, certainly I would take Corel out of your startup group. The problem is as I said, that Corel/WordPerfect seems to sort of keep custody of resources, even after you have exited the program. A resource packrat. I have resource meter (Start>programs>accessories>system tools) running most of the time so I can keep tabs on resources level although the meter itself also takes some resources - catch22. When I see resources getting low, (an icon goes in the system tray, by the clock, and will show green, yellow, or red levels) it's a simple click to clear what MaxMem can, and I can usually continue. Sometimes I have to exit other programs which may be running but unused. You might want to check out Window Watcher http://www.karenware.com/ which will tell you all that's running at any particular time (like ctr>alt>del on steroids) Of course, the best cure is to reboot, to your newly pared down start up program list.
    Sincerely,
    Chas

I have found out that if I disable Zone Alarm the problem seems to
disappear -so far. I took it out of the start up with msconfig. I will still
consider all the other ideas. I will just start Zone Alarm whenever I go
    on line.

    Thanks, Jerry
