I just did it with my work computer with no problems. It is possible that the servers are just overloaded. Try downloading again at an off hour.

Hi,
Go to the site below and put the KB number in the first box
Select Windows XP from the other box

Try rebooting the PC and then try Windows Update again, that sometimes fixes things. And there is no doubt that the servers have been very busy, I had problems downloading with a couple of my Virtual Machines until today.

I did not have a problem at home last night other a bad moment when I saw that Windows 3.1 name and had a thought of "back to the future" fix for XP. At work today no problems both connections high speed cable at home and T-1 line at work. In the past when I had similar problems on those downloads with my laptop, it worked better to seperate the downloads, especially when on dial up.
If you think AOL sucks just try MSN to see really bad service.

Almost 14 hrs later downloads are still failing.
Dunedin: I tried your link and downloaded "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB890923)". Saved it to the disc and run it but this did not install it either.
I also restored the PC to a day before any updates were released and tried but no avail.
I suppose I shall wait until late this afternoon and try again.
Thank you.

Make sure you're not getting low on space on C: drive -- even though some of those updates are only a couple of MB, they change a lot of files and therefore need a huge amount of space (tens of MB each) to store the backup files. I had a couple of servers at work which got caught by that this time around.
If you still have issues, go through Windows Update and click on the "Read more..." link provided for each update. That opens the relevant security advisory, and you can download a standalone installer for the update from there. Those standalone installers will often work where the Windows Update ones inexplicably fail, and even when the standalone ones don't work they tend to tell you why (eg you're short on hard drive space).
Safe computing is a habit, not a toolkit.

Eventually I was able to download all updates but only one by one through Custom Install only.
Thank you for all your input.
