Windows XP Fax problem
I connect to Internet by Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC #2.
After long time not using my fax facility I had to send and receive some faxes today. It did not work(used to work on dial-up).
Fax Configuration Wizard/Please select fax device, is only giving me one option of CXT10B6 - HCF PCI Modem (COM3). Shouldn't it be giving me a choice of REALTEX too?
I removed the Fax and reinstalled it by Add and Remove Windows Components unfortunately made no differance.
Any solution please?

I'm not one of the resident experts here, but I'll take a shot in the dark for you anyway. (at the risk of embarrassing myself)
My Guess: It's not working because you aren't using dial up anymore.
You have to be using your phone line modem, (dial up IP) to fax with most pre-installed software. If you're using a cable or DSL connection you may have to use a fax program that works through your email. I use efax and am very happy with it. efax site
Good Luck. If I'm completely off base someone will be along shortly to set me straight and help you out.

You can only use a suitable modem for faxing, as Soul says. You'll have to set it to use the PCI modem.

I was right?! Woot!
Thanks for verifying my advice Sparks. Could hmmm use an IP like AOL along with his main one? I thought I read somewhere that AOL can sort of piggyback on top of a high speed connection. (although I don't know how it would actually work)

The ISP has nothing at all to do with faxing, as long as a suitable fax modem is connected to the telephone line, then sending a fax is just the same as making a normal phone call. So if hmmm has DSL or cable then he can send a fax at the same time as he's online. Users with dial-up have to disconnect from the Internet while sending or receiving faxes.

Thank you guys...SuperSparks sorry for being an idiot but do I understand right then I'll have to set up something to be able to send and receive fax. Can you be more precise as I am not very good with technical terms.
Thank you.

You need to make sure that you have a modem installed in your machine (either interanl or external). You then need to make sure that the fax program you are using can find your modem. I know that for Hot Fax (which I use) there is a set up modem feature that will connect the program to the modem.
Once you have set everything up you can test it out by dialing your phone number and if your computer answers the phone then you are set to go.
Once you are done with your faxing, make sure that you stop your fax program from running or else it may pick up your phone instead of allowing your answering machine or you to answer any incoming calls.
Hope this helps.

It appears that you already have a modem fitted from what you posted originally. As long as you have the drivers installed, and it is plugged into a phone socket, then you should be good to go. Here are the drivers if you need them:

If you don't want to use any 3rd party software, then you'll find NTFax in All Programs>Accessories>Communications. Fire it up and let the Wizard walk you through setting it up.

Here's something that may help you with that: http://www.pcwebopedia.com/
This site helps me a lot. There's a lot of terms that I'm unfamiliar with so I just keep Webopedia open when reading the forums. Someday I hope to be as smart as Super Sparks and the rest of the staff. (and all of the super smart members like Doc) They're my heros.
