Strange Problem With Inline Auto Complete

Hello Everyone and a Very Happy Easter!!!

I just recently bought a new computer and was setting everything up and putting my programs back in and etc and I've noticed two things that are bugging the daylights out of me.

I went into Control Panel and clicked on Internet Options and clicked the Content tab and then clicked Auto Complete as I've always done in the past on computers. It gave the selections such as forms and usernames and passwords on forms and web addresses and etc and I have all of these checked. I also have checked where it says to prompt me to save passwords.

The problem is that now after two full weeks of basically filling in the same passwords and usernames on things, it has yet to flash up with a suggestion for me to click on. I also notice something else that is probably related, but not sure.

I use Outlook Express to run my Premium Hotmail Account through. I've done this for years and am using the upgraded pay service with Hotmail now also. I configured the account just fine and it all synchronized, but now, each time I open Outlook Express, I get a small box that already has my Hotmail e-mail filled out but is asking me for my password. The box below is checked but shaded out saying Save Password. I have gone into Outlook Express and added my password more times than I can count, and clicked on the button to save password and hit apply, but it always goes back to the blank password box.

I have Window's XP Home edition as I was running on my previous computer and my room mate just bought a new system with XP home edition and I set her's up and none of this is happening to her.

I would appreciate any ideas on how I can get Window's to use the auto complete and also for Outlook Express to quit prompting me for a password. I know it's easy to add it each time, but it's just a pain.

Thank you so much! I can always count on this board!!

    Hi Leigh Ann,

Happy Easter to you too. Did you get a big chocolate egg?

Did you click OK after checking all the Autocomplete options? It is easy to forget that. Did you go back to check that your selections stayed?

Here are a couple of fixes
AutoComplete Mode Enabled or Disabled (Line 37)

Restore IE AutoComplete Password Prompt (Line 13)

Otherwise here are some MS links for the problem. Hope you don`t mind links, but the fixes are a bit long to post

If you try any of above please remember to back up the registry first.

Sorry I posted this problem of mine in the wrong forum, but thanks for moving it and not deleting it.

    Hello Again!

I went through all the links you supplied me with and did alot of reading and followed step by step instructions in each of them and then re-booted as instructed and still no auto complete working.

I called the manufacturer since my system is only about 2 weeks old and talked to people there and short of doing a complete system restore, they had no ideas I had not tried.

I really hate to do a system restore as I have spent this past two weeks installing and migrating files and data.

I have one more question. I know I've read on Virtual Dr somewhere amidst the many thousands of great postings about a program that will remember passwords for me. Should I just go this route instead of going crazy figuring out why this simple thing will not work? If so, does anyone have a good reccomendation? Also, since I have my hotmail coming through my Outlook Express and have the paid premium service that allows it to still do this, any ideas on getting the pop up blocker asking for my hotmail password to quit?
In my Outlook Express tools and accounts and mail and hotmail properties, I see my username (email address) and there is a blank box for password and yet under the password box in the small box that is always checked to save password. Do you think this is related to my AutoComplete not working right?

These are the only two little glitches the system has and I suppose I'm just looking for a better way to either fix this or hurdle it without doing a restore already.

Sorry for rambling on and on...LOL

    Thanks Again!!!

    Just a quick update.

After going into registry again and deleting (after making a backup, just in case) the subfolder under Protected Storage System Provider, or trying to, as I kept getting the error stating it could not be deleted. I went looking for my index.dat files, which apparently is where info is stored that allows Auto Complete to do it's thing. I've tinkered and tweaked so many little things and now, I'm not getting the pop up box prompting me for my hotmail password whenever I open Outlook Express. Wooo Hoooo That's one hurdle!! I also notice that on E-mails, the names are auto completing after I type a letter in.

Now, if I can just get regular usernames like on game sites and etc to work, I would be a Happy Little Easter Egg today! LOL

    Thanks!!

    Leigh Ann,

Only other thing I can think is that maybe the index.dat has become corrupted.
Here is some information about index.dat
    http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=33

The program mentioned, “Index.dat Suite”, allows you to view the files and choose which to delete.

Be careful what you delete and I would advise you not to delete
    “index.dat in C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\OfflineCache”

I have seen problems after deleting that one as Windows does not seem to recreate it.
