oldhermit--As we all know, spyware is one of the biggest problems when using a PC. If a PC user does not practice "safe surfing" and has limited or no protection, like Antivirus, spyware blockers and protectors, firewall, etc., then I could believe that spyware is present on the PC and could report back any info on the hard drive. This assumes the tax info is in a file on the hard drive. It boils down to taking sensible steps to protect the PC.
Or if the tax info has been sent to a site which is not secure, the same problems could exist but occurs during the transmission or even from a disreputable tax preparation site.
On the other hand, sometimes reports like this are myth.

Reports like that have been around before. Normally it's someone inadvertantly configuring Kazaa etc to share all of the My Documents folder in the mistaken belief that P2P apps are only for media files.
Safe computing is a habit, not a toolkit.
