ACCESS RESTRICTIONS thru ROUTER

I have been trying a little feature on my wireless router wrt54g. The tab for access restrictions has policies to setup for internet restrictions. Problem is I cant seem to get it to work. I set the router to deny internet access specifying the days and times, however the "wireless" laptop that I try to restrict, seems to log on with no problem. I have set it both with the IP address and MAC address. (got IP doing ipconfig /all from the laptop) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi gbeato,

I don't have that router so I cannot give much help. However, take a look here if you haven't already. This explains the Restricted Access tab for the Linksys router you have. It might help you solve your problem. If not, then reply back and hopefully somebody can help you further.

I set the settings accordingly but still can not seem to lock out the internet access.
( thats a change? we scratch our heads when we cant log on, and now I am scratching my head because I can log on!)

You can do 2 things in this regard.

Solution 1) Assign Static IP to the Wireless Adapter of Your Wireless Computer and do Access Restriction settings for that.

Solution 2) Try to Upgrade the latest firmware for your Router(Check for the Correct Hardware Version of the Router) and do the Solution 1.

Ok...so I set the static IP address, but then lost all connection to the internet and router. ( I had diasbled the restriction policy so it was not that.) So then I set the IP back to automatic, reset the restriction policy and it picked up the policy and restricted the internet access. It is like the router reset itself or at least recognized the IP of the laptop when I reset the address and then applied the policy. Wierd...anyway its working now.

I do have a follow up question though. If you are logged on to any IM, in this case AOL IM, when the policy times become active or fall in the range of restricted times, does it kick the user off or does it remain "online". Seems like it does not log the user off. Is there a way around this so I can restrict the AOL IM specifically between my restricted times as well as log the user off between those times?

Well, I don't use AOL but it should be very similar to any instant messaging program. If you are using Windows Messenger and you get kicked off the Internet you are unable to send a instant message to your contact. So, I suspect AOL to be very similar. It doesn't sign out the person using the program. It just stops them from communicating across the Internet.

Everytime I setup a static ip address, I can not log onto the internet at all. What am I missing here?

For some reason, the laptop seems to be able to log onto the internet even when I have the restrictions setup. Which leads me back to the question above, I set the static ips, but now can not log on at all.

When you set the IP address statically you'll also need to manually set the subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server(s). You can use the same settings as what the router automatically assigns, which you can view by typing "ipconfig /all" at a command prompt.

Ok...I got the static ip.
But let me refer back to my original question of when I set the restrictions on the router, why is it that I can still log on to the internet and aol IM? I thought the purpose of restrictions was to restrict this kind of access. Sometimes it works, and then there are ays that it does not.
