Driver Data Base Lockup
Still working on Wife's PC.
Having problems getting modem to run. Went into Device Manager and deleted it, on reboot "Please wait while windows builds a driver information data base" message came up and about 60% through it locked up. Turned off PC and took out the modem, booted up fine, so I went into the Network Protocol to plug some holes per "Shields Up". I clicked on protocol Add the the "please wait for data base building message came up again and locked up again at 60%.
Any suggestions?
Also where do I find the POP3 and SMTP info on my PC?

Does the modem use an enumerator which is removed through Add/Remove programs and still shows in device manager?

Have you installed the latest inf motherboard drivers for that one?
Have a look in windows\inf\other for an inf file relating to the modem. You might also remove the com2 port from device manager if there is one.
Here is a drastic thought you can hold till later.
Rebuild the Windows 98 driver information database by renaming the Drvdata.bin and Drvidx.bin files located in the Windows\Inf folder.
Then have a look at device mangler.
Perhaps there are some 3.1 inf files you might like to lose as well. They occasionally cause confusion.

Outlook express. Where do you find the information on POP3 and SMPT, I try to set up both these PC's just the same so I can compare one to another. Still have not found the driver.
I found "V90 Upgrade and Inf files for the product No. I have. But I keep getting timed out. The instructions says to double click the file to start the flash utility. So I can't use them in the install wizzard, right?

This is some config info - you should be able to look and cancel out of it.
In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
In the Internet Accounts dialog box choose the account and then click Mail.
In the Display Name box, type the name you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.
In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account you are using (for example, "[email protected]"), and then click Next.
Under E-mail Server Names, select the appropriate incoming mail server type (POP3 is the default type), and then type the names of your incoming and outgoing mail servers. Click Next. NOTE: This information is provided by your Internet service provider (ISP). If you do not know this information, contact your ISP.
In the Internet Mail Account Name box, type a name to identify the mail account you are configuring. This is known as the "friendly" name for the account. Click Next.

You're right about the USR upgrade policies and site nature - I won't install them in anyone's machine anymore unless I already owe them a large favor and they throw a tantrum insisting that I do.
What's the file name on it??

Thanks IMM that's what I needed. I think I fixed my lock up problem with Norton Utilities maintience and defraggin.
I downloaded a universal driver for non-winmodems, us robotics form winDrivers.com.
Iwill try US Robotics tomorrow morning, if I can't get in I'll try the universal.
Thanks Again!
