Question Removing Entry from Control Panel?

Running W2KPro, updated with EZ-trust AV, AdAwareSE, SpybotS&D,Spyware Blaster,SPF, and now M$Antispyware - puter is clean. In Control Panel there is an icon for InterBase Manager - which is not running. I do not know exactly what this software is supposed to do, why it is needed, etc. Google just gives me some tech stuff that is over my head. I have tried removing it, but no luck. Using regedit, there are two keys that refer to it. They are in HKEY_Local Machine\system\controlset001\enum\root\Legacy_Interbase Guardian, and also Legacy_Interbase Server. I did a backup of the registry, and then tried to delete the two keys - no luck in either Standard or Safe Mode.
Can someone please explain what this software is - layman's terms -, is it needed, can it be removed?
The computer is running with no problems, at least that I have detected.
Any info and help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    frums

    Hi frums.....
I thought I could find an answer as to what interbase/legacy/guardian
is.....but I've come up with so many...ie: mozilla firefox and other 'customed' legacy enterprise programs.....that's all out of my league
...sorry I couldn't help....but I'm sure someone will come along that will..

Hi poppy4. Thanks for the info. I basically got the same thing when doing my Google search, and like I said, out of my league too.
And knowing VDr, someone should be along with more info, or at least a better understanding of what all it means.

    Thanks again,
    frums

Get TweakUI here... It's one of the Power Toys for Windows... see if it can do anything for you. Once installed you should have a Control Panel options in it's list of tweaks... check there and let us know.

Dl'd TeakUi again, and it installed ok. Ran it, and found the InterBase Manager there using ibmgr.cpl. The only option in TweakUi is to unselect it -remove the check mark - and it will not show up in CP. I would rather just remove it totally from the puter. Did a registry search for the ibmgr.cpl - no listings. From CP, clicking on the InterBase Mgr icon, opens a new window, with the following: Startup Mode and selections of Auto or Manual -greyed out, not selectable; Root Directory = not known; Status = the InterBase server is currently not installed and check box / start greyed out;check box bottom of window selected (run the interbase server as server on Windows NT) - this is also greyed out, can't change. I did a Google on ibmgr.cpl and found this: http://bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,30230,00.html

However, the uninstall does not apply, because neither Borland or InterBase show up in Add/Remove Programs. Did a registry check again for Borland - there were 3 minor keys there, I don't knowingly run any Borland products, removed them. Reboot and reg scan next step to see if there are any problems. Will post further results.

    Question

After doing the reboot etc., everything is running fine, but still have that icon in the Control Panel that I would like to totally remove from the system. Under regedit, still cannot delete either of the two entries listed in first posting.

Any more info on this would be greatly, and gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks again

Search your Windows folder for *.cpl files ... find the offensive applet and kill it, or move it to another folder if you're not sure. Refresh the CP and see if that gets it...

    Talking

    Abhoth - you da man!!

Found the little piker hiding in System32, gave it a ride to Recycle Bin, checked CP...and voila...it was gone. Now will give it a proper burial and all will be well.

Thanks for your persistence and knowledgeable help. Just another reason why VDr is such a great site.

    Thanks again. Much appreciated.
