Blue Screen at end of Win98 setup

Micro Star MS-5169, 128mb Ram, Creative Labs 3D Blaster Riva TNT2(new), Maxtor 20gb(new)
    AMD 400mhz cpu.
Just flashed BIOS so it would take the 400mhz cpu, no problem. change cpu from 300 to 400. Windows loaded up to detecting plug-n-play devices and hardware. Got a blue screen that says "an exception 00 has occured at 0028:c1822944 in VxD CDFS(03) + 00007F94. This is called from 0028:C1822F70 in VxD CDFS(03) + 000085C0. It may be possible to continue normally. Press any key"

Then it goes back to setting up hardware and plug-n-play devices. And just sits there. Mouse moves.

Any help for me? Wife's computer!!

    Hi pfoerste,
I had the same problem a year ago with my old computer... I was unable to find a good solution to it so I ended up formatting my C drive and clean-installing Win98 on it... The problem disappeared...

pfoerste. CDFS(CD-ROM file system) is a 32bit porcted-mode driver to support CD-ROM drives.

i would try to boot in safe mode (the CD-ROM is not avalabe in safe mode). without doing anything reboot in normal. see what happens?

it may give the system the opertunit to find the remaing hardware.

    hope this workes

I have formatted and reloaded at least 4 times today. And it won't go into safe mode.

I went into the BIOS and changed the Graphics Aperture Size to 32 and put plug n play aware O/S to no. I loaded a little father and I got a message. "error loading c:\window\system\msjava.dll. an attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format" also when I reboot I get a message "
"windows foun an error in you system files and successfully fixed the problem" I have gotten this message several times today.

    Thanks!

Perhaps a possibility (though not as likely as others) is this producing the CDFS error.

Thanks IMM I don't think that applies to me, but I am not sure, it's too heavy for me to understand. I have not gotten any more error messages It just freezes 3/2 the way through loading now, I mean loading the program win98 from the CD. This all started after I change the cpu. It post and dos will run but I cannot load windows

    Thanks for the try.

Well, let's look at the obvious possiblities.

    Bad CPU

    Bad Flash

CPU overheating from cooler fan not seated on CPU properly.

One thing you can try if you do not mind the trouble ( which is where I would start) is to flash back to original bios and replace old CPU to see if your problem disappears.

That is after checking cooler seating of course.

If trouble still persists with old CPU, you can at least rule out defective CPU.

Also which amd 400 is this? Are the settings/switches/jumpers set correctly?

PS. Plug and Play OS in bios should be enabled.
Please remember to post back whether your problem is resolved or
not, so that others may gain from the knowledge.

Stev-rey, it freezes on setting up hardware and finilizing setting, 18 minutes left. (that right now)
Both cpu's were running this morning when I started. The case is wide open and I let it set for 1/2hour and it frezzes at the same point within 2 minutes and if I reboot it goes back to the same spot.

Tomorrow morning (I am wore out)I am going to put the 300 back in and see what happens.

When I flashed, my first time, the program did not ask me if I wanted to back up the old one. Sooo kind of looks like my wife will be getting a new pc. Her's was working but it is a pc chips with onboard video and audio. Agrivating!!

    Thank again!!
DrMDJ, sorry to me 400 amd is a 400. The book only goes to 350 and I had to make only one pin change on S1. The flash was suppost to make the BIOS accept the 400.

    Hi
as the current FRESH setup is botched anyhow, do this.

power up, and go into BIOS setup.
    disable secondary cache
(its an MSI board, and its an AMD, that's why)
    save, and reboot from floppy
( if you boot from cdrom, accept CDROM support, and later on decline lincence so you get an A:\> prompt )

    at A:\>
    format C: /Q /S
---if you have a partition or second hard drive in there, make the following a D: ---
    C: --if you can, D: --
    md win98
    cd win98
    copy [cdromdriveletter]:\win98

    reboot without floppy
    at C:\>
--if win98 was copied to D: then you type D: here --
    cd win98
    setup

once all hardware has been set up, and windows runs ...
reboot into BIOS an enable level two cache.

I had this condition with my first replacement board that was found to be defective.

I did replace it, but learned after there was a work around that some used.

Disable ACPI at setup by this switch.

    Setup /pi

BTW. I originally learned the switch command was Setup /p i

And was told in another forum not to use space between p and i.

Keep in mind I learn by reading and memory.

    THANKS EVERYONE
I got it going. I reflashed the BIOS with the next older version and windows installed without a hitch. Now I will start adding the rest of the cards and programs.
It's great when everything works the way it should.
The post says it is a 350mhz, but mabe my wife won't care. As long as it don't crash.
    She's funny that way.
