    IE 6.0 upgrade

This morning (much to my better judgement) I upgraded from IE 5.5 to 6.0 because an anti virus program I wanted to download said it was required. I stayed with 5.5 because of the many hair-pulling posts when 6.0 was first provided. I did a search here but gave up when my eyes glazed over. I am NOT running HiJackThis which seems to be the problem with others who complained of a much slower computer after upgrading.
I am running 98SE, 256Mb ram, latest upgrade for Zone Alarm (upgraded just this morning), CoolWebSearch, SpyWareGuard, AVG version 7.0.3, AdAware SE, SpyBot, SpyWareBlaster -- all running latest versions. I also have GoBack installed and may have to resort to it saving my butt again. Wouldn't be the first or twentieth time it has come to the rescue. Comments or suggestions will be rewarded with a double Jack Daniel's on the rocks (yeah, right).

Hi JC.....to the point of upgrading, you have my sympathy

I recently upped my ram from 128MB to 320MB and that made a big difference......
have to think you should post a log in the HijackThis forum........
btw go-back has done well for me too!!

I finally went to IE 6, but I have IE 5.5 in a folder. Sounds as though you are pretty well set up.

BTW I made a HiJack log of my 98SE when it was clean so I could could compare it against a new log if the situation required. That said, one should be aware that HJT log does not detect everything. But it will get rid of alot, the same as AdAware, SpywareBlaster Etc. You have to use a combination.

If you go to MSConfig and uncheck those programs you don't need on start up it will keep you at your optimum speed. I only call up my Malware Dense programs when needed. Hope this helps.

Just did a cold boot after several hours of being off. I went to Outlook Express 6.0 first thing and am now looking for a calendar to time it. 5.5 was up and running in no time. Jack Daniels offer still stands, no winners yet however. JC

Johnny Canuck--If I read your first post correctly, you have no problems (unless you find things slower vs. IE5.5, and I do not think there is much you can do about that).
My only suggestion, therefore, is to go to Windows Update and get the latest Critical Updates. There are quite a few even for Win98 (and IE6). I presume you got the latest version of IE 6.
P.S. BTW, since HiJackThis runs only when you scan with it, not sure why it should slow the PC down, but maybe I am showing my usual ignorance.

poppy4: Interesting point regarding which came first, the chicken (zone alarm) or the egg (IE6.0). It was a long time ago (this morning ) but the time between the two upgrades was less than 30 minutes if I remember correctly so not much testing time to take notes. JD neat?? NEAT??? It has to be ice cold, no more than 3 standard size ice cubes however.
welshjim: I downloaded IE6.0 from the Windows update site and have all the latest upgrades as of this morning. And yes, I can do something about it - I can revert to 5.5 by using GoBack. Also you should note that I am NOT running HiJackThis as I stated in original post so therefore it is not the reason for slower speed. I said that previous postings mentioned that HJT was the cause of their slowdowns. Looks like you may have been sampling my Jack Daniels. JC

.....if it were me, I'd take it back before both IE and ZA.
I'm waiting to see what, if anything, transpires with the ZA update before I put it in.......don't know what it contains.

    okay...3..small cubes...

Is your boot up slow or are you up and already running an IE is taking a long time to come up. Are you on dsl or dial-up.

I had a big prob with ZoneAlarm causingf my pc to take about 3 minutes to boot and then crashing regularly. It used to work and then suddenly it started causing probs. I went back to simpler days and re-installed an older version of ZoneAlarm 2.0.26 which avoids the "software bloat" of later versions

Saturday 11am EST Feb 12/05 As of this time I am running IE 5.5 and Zone Alarm 5.5?? Not sure of Zone Alarm version except that it is the version just prior to yesterday's update. I used GoBack to revert to yesterday morning just prior to the two upgrades. Yeah, yeah, I know I should not do two upgrades at once or within minutes of each other but I did, so there!
Markgc: The boot up time was about the same as always, it was the slow downloads to get to certain sites that had changed. It took forever to get to Bloomberg site to see what latest price was on bbl of oil. Also a couple of newspapers were out of date by the time they loaded. Cold boots are always timed with a calendar anyway, never a watch. Even Outlook Express 6.0 was much slower to download messages than previous version. After "going back" OE is again as fast as previously. End of story.
poppy 4 wins the JD only I have had to cancel because he drinks it NEAT. Imagine. Sheesh!! JC

Now you might not have the 'latest' in IE or ZA, but you are able to run with a modicum of sanity
As for 'neat'.....or 'on the rocks'......I live in OHIO and we only have enough electricity for 'rigged' elections, not for making ice cubes

I am running a 750Meg pentium and running the latest IE on a dialup and it moves fairly fast. In fact my 750 meg pentium win98se boots has ZoneAlarm 2.0 coming up faster than my 3.0gig HP laptop running xp pro and a later version of ZoneAlarm. Sad isn't it.

Have you tried disabling your av and firewall software to see if it is causing probs. Take a look at your msconfig and see what else is loading at startup.

Final word on this and then this post is considered closed .....
Markgc: I am very happy with things as they now stand, that is, the way they were prior to the two upgrades (read "downgrades"). I use Startup Cop to check what is loading at startup and can delete or hold back all programs running or want to run. That's same as msconfig only with more control. Programs running are the ones I want to run. Thanks for your and everyone's interest and input.
