win tv bu Hauppage.com
Was looking at a PCI card that would allow to view/record/play in background TV programs.
Any of you familiar with going this route?
To look at TV and or record for future viewing. while doing other work on the computer.
Card Cost $150-200 Cdn. requires a cable/satellite connection.

Previously I too was researching ways to bring VHS tapes into my computer and a friend (Ridgerunr) suggested the use of this component. Since he does this sort of thing all the time, I believe his recommendation to be the best there is to be had. So, yes, it's a good product.

Well I went to BestBuy subsidiary here in Canada Called FutureShop.
They had the PCI model WINTV-PVR-250 $150 Cdn.
PCI Slot.
and the WINTV-PVR-USB2.0. $200.00 Cdn.
USB2.0 which would allow to attach to another computer if desired.
Posting the URL's for the products.

This has the PVR ones. Which is all they had in stock. Has the same
features as the 401 plus the PVR feature.. which means I can be on the Net here while recording in background.

The model you suggested Ridgerunr.
Have PCI slot (s) free, but also have space on the USB.
After you look at the URL posting.
Which would you Opt for?

Wow! What an education.
Going from one site to another and reading up on the for's and nay's and other products available, Its a challange to pick the one that suits your needs.
Thanks, PhotoLady and Ridgerunr for your input. It just goes to show how easely one can be led astray at the "Stores".
Told the Salesperson... "Let me do some homework first".
Well so far I too vote the WinTV-150.
My use of the unit is
!. I have Expressvu and at times spend hours at computer doing volunteer work. Would like to record a program for later viewing.
2. Have a bunch of old VHS tapes that I want to trandfer to DVD and give the "Kids" something to remember the Older folks by.
3. There some educational channels that could be taped... so that when the Granschildren come over they can be entertained.
Its a new Learning curve.
Now, the question of Where will I get the unit.
Back to the Internet sites of the vendors in my area, failing that... US side.
I'm willing to listen to any other input. Thank You.

Another site that gives a lot of good advice on video capturing and related is Lord Smurf's: http://www.digitalfaq.com/
Lots of good stuff over at this one too: http://www.doom9.org/
Yes,,it's a learning curve, but it can be a lot of fun(with a' bit of frustration at times ),but well worth it...

adendum.
Why does winTV-PVR 2.0 want you to hook up direct to PCI USB2.0 card. In lieu of Hub 2.0 w/AC power?
Is there a difference?

May I suggest ATI PCI TV Wonder (Elite Remote Control Edition) ...
It look like about the same price as these other cards, but it comes with a remote control, so you can change the channel from across the room and not have to get out of bed and run to your computer to change the channel. Thats sooooo 70's people. :-)
