Hi Jim,
This is a common problem and here is the information I have come across.
1 AVG has only allocated one download mirror for the free edition (maybe to encourage us to change to the paid for version) so if the site is busy it is difficult to get a connection
2 Try updating manually by using the “Update” button in the Control Centre
3 Check your firewall settings, the AVGINET.EXE and AVGCC.EXE applications must be allowed to connect to the internet
4 Add the AVG Free 7 update server to your "Trusted Zone".
Internet Options | Security [tab] | Trusted Zone [icon] | Sites [button]
(type) guru.grisoft.com
(type) free.grisoft.cz
Note: minor updates are downloaded from: "guru.grisoft.com"
Major program updates are downloaded from: "free.grisoft.cz"
5.From the AVG forum, uninstall the latest version and then reinstall. You should be asked to allow reboot to complete the installation. If this does not happen after reinstalling reboot then access update manager.

I have had the same problem trying to receive updates in the past few days with AVG 7.0 Free Edition. It's probably not your computer or firewall if you have been able to receive updates in the past. I would recommend setting your automatic scheduling to update your virus table for real early in the morning sometime 2 am or after. If you want to do it manually then you will just have to keep clicking on Checking For Updates. It will eventually update if you are persistent.

Thanks folks. I got through step 4 of Elaine's suggestions and it still did the same thing. Decided to give it one more try and the updates downloaded and installed as ginky4 suggested, so guess your're both right. Again thanks.
