Computer reboots when running Everest

My computer has been making beeping noice from overheating. I used Everest to see the temprature and found that it was a bit high.

I opened it up and cleaned the dust (for the first time in last 2 years) especially off of the case fan, and CPU fan.

While doing the above, I also installed an Ultra ATA/133 TX2 controller PCI card (from Promise) and a new 300 gb HD. I attached a HD cooling fan to the hard drive to keep it cool. Farmatted the hard drive and all is looking good.

Started Everest again to see if the temps have gone down. I can click on everything except Sensor under Computer. As soon as I click on Sensor to check the temps, the screen goes black and the computer restarts.

I am running windows2k and I have never experienced this before opening up the case this morning.

I have a dual boot with XP. When running XP, the Everest runs fine. Sensor node doesn't cause the computer to crash and the temps are a bit down.

What do you all think could be causing this?

I have even tried installing WinXP drivers for the controller card on win2k OS, to no avail.

One thing that I have noticed is that the Powersuplly fan is not spinning. I know I need to take care of this but this couldn't be causing this right?

Ok, here is an update...

I removed the new hard drive, restarted my machine, launched Everest, clicked on Sensor and it still goes black and then reboots.

I then temoved the new Controller card restarted my machine, launched Everest, clicked on Sensor and it still goes black and then reboots.

So its not the above two of the three things I did this morning. The third thing was, I cleaned up dust off of fans. How in the heck am I going to undo this now :-)

Somebody please help. What concerns me is that if it reboots when running Everest, its probably going to reboot every once in a while.

It very well could and probably is your power supply. If the fan is not working it's getting too hot and freezing your computer. Do you have another you can put in there?

That is what I will try next.

This is a 400W PS. The other one I have is 300W so I dont really want to give this one up. One thing I did notice was that the Fan's wires are soldered into the PS board. Is it possible to just change the fan of the powersupply and then connect the fan's wires to somewhere on the mobo?

Also, if it is the PS and its fan causing the reboot, why would it work in XP?

Everything works in Win2k. I have been on it for hours without crashing. Its only and only if I launch Everest and click on the Sensor is when it goes black restarts.

Another question... how do I read the dump file?

Hi, as it tells you what you want to know in XP, I would not worry about it in 2k. Try running it in 2k with the /safe command line option or even the /safest. You could post over here it is their forum:-

Good point. Based on this and the other info you've given there is no reason to suspect the power supply (though the fan does need tending to).

Just so we're clear... Before doing the 3 things you did Everest did run fine under win2k, right?

Yes - It worked like a charm. I hardly ever use Win XP. When the beeping sound started, I was in Win2k and checked the tempratures in Everest while in Win2k. That is when I decided to open it up for cleaning.

Just one word of caution - if you are going to change the power supply fan, be aware that there are potentially lethal voltages stored in a switch-mode power supply even when it is unplugged from the mains. Be very careful what you touch, or wear some insulating gloves before messing around inside.
