In IE, go to Tools>Internet Options, then you will find scripting settings in both the Security>Custom Level section and in the Advanced tab.

towjoe42--To enable javascript, IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level|check all buttons under Scripting (at the bottom) to Enable|OK.
However, are you sure you have javascript installed anymore?
You can download Microsoft's version here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
P.S. The above assumes you mean Javascript and not Java.

When I connect to the link you provided I cannot connect to the web page and here is what I get, which is common to many sites I try to visit.
You are not authorized to view this page
You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

towjoe42--Does that error message have anything at the bottom left such as Error 403--Forbidden?
Unfortunately, "You are not authorized to view this page " can have many causes. many are related to other programs you have on the PC. Are you using Internet Information Services?
Here are references to a bunch of reasons.
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...w+this+page%22
Just a long shot. Try putting www.microsoft.com into IE Tools|Internet Options| Trusted Sites. (Uncheck the box "Require Server Notification...".)
P.S. You did not tell us whether you Enabled the scripting settings in Security tab|Custom Level.
And if this is happening at many sites you should consider a scan with a spyware detector (assuming you can reach their sites)
AdAware
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
SpybotS&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
With either of these programs, you should update their reference files before scanning.
I assume you have an up to date antivirus program running on your PC.

towjoe42--I hate to do this to you, but now that we know you have the 403 error message, there are even more possibilities

I have tried everything you all suggested.
Went to Google and looked at all the postings. They either were too over my head, or did not recognize anything that resembled a solution. Most of them were for people with servers.
To sum up again:
Yahoo tells me I must enable Javascript, I follow their detailed instructions and it does not help.
I can go to any website I want with no problem. When I actually click onto the "Download" button I then get the web page with the Error 403 and "You are not authorized to view this page".
I have the automatic critical update set up and have installed all the INternet explorer updates with the service packs as well as everything for Win XP.
If I go to the link you provided to download Javascript on Microsoft, It tells me that I need IE 6.0 sp1 installed.
When you go to the IE 6.0 sp1 download site it tells you that it is already integrated into Win XP Service pack 2 which I already have.
the only programs I can think of that I downloaded is AVG anti virus and Zone Alarm Pro. A few others were from Software that came with a few accessories.
I did successfully download Ad-aware and it installed fine, thats the only thing that would download.
Could this problem be related to something in the win XP administration permissions? I have not done anything in this area since I installed XP and this problem just started happening recently.

You said you downloaded Zone Alarm Pro, was that recent?. Next time you hit download and get the 403 error you could try looking in ZA's log files to check whether it was blocked there for any reason.
As for yahoo, I'm assuming you mean e-mail?, I have active scripting disabled on my comp and I put my yahoo mail in my trusted sites without any bother.
As for the admin bit, I would doubt that very much.
Good luck

towjoe42--Next time you get that error message, you could also look into Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer|open both Application and System windows (click on those words in left panel) and see if there are any error messages there. You can expand on the error messages by right clicking|Properties.

Thanks. the Zone alarm and AVG were the first two things I downloaded after I installed win xp and got on the internet.
Yes, I was referring to yahoo mail. When I try to open my mail it tells me I need to enable javascript.
Do you think I should uninstall XP sp2 seeing as that is where javascript is installed from, and then let the Auto updater come up and tell me to install it? thanks, Joe

Regarding yahoo mail, I would simply put the e-mail address in your trusted sites, uncheck the server verification box and apply the default level (for the trusted sites zone only). If that doesn't work then the more experienced members may have some further ideas. I personally cant see it being an sp2 problem. Bearing in mind your 403 error, it may well be you might need to reinstall IE but I'd rather leave that to somebody more knowledgable on this matter.
Regards
EDIT** In fact it might be a good idea to go to control panel>internet options and hit the advanced tab and restore defaults there also. Just be sure to uncheck those nasty install on demand boxes though.

I did go to see if any Errors in Administration and found a couple recurring, though not at the time and day of my downloading problems. Here they are:
Faulting application vsmon.exe, version 5.5.62.4, faulting module vsmon.exe, version 5.5.62.4, fault address 0x00013c75.
The description for Event ID ( 5603 ) in Source ( WinMgmt ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Rsop Planning Mode Provider, root\RSOP.
Does not seem to be anything I can recognize as a Download or JavaScript fault. Not sure if there are two things going on here related or seperate?
As far as the suggestion to restore defaults in Internet options, I did as suggested and no change. Still get the yahoo warning that Javascript may not be enabled.
I found out as I stated above that java script that was in IE SP1, was later integrated into Win XP SP 2.
I went to add remove programs, and un-installed win XP SP2.
I then restarted and connected to the internet and let Automatic Update recognize need to download it, which it did.
That did not have any effect on the inability for JavaSCript and downloads to work, (although the automatic download update worked).

you may have done this already, but worth a check again...
in zonealarm > privacy > main tab...
have mobile code control 'off'
and check settings in the 'custom' button also.
ZA will then allow javascripts, embedded ojects, mime objects and scripts.

Looks like the suggestion from NLDY did the trick. The settings in Zone alarm he said to look at were all checked.
No more Unauthorized pages, yahoo mail works now without telling me about lack of Javascript, and dowloading things is working again.
Everyones ideas were all fantastic, and gave me insights into all those other areas to keep watch on. thanks to the whole crew. Joe
