    New DVD R/RW does not see CD

    I have just swapped my old CD drive for a DVD+/-R/RW drive (Liteon) but when I put a disc in (audio or data) it will not autorun and when I click the drive it says "please insert disc". Device manager says it is "working correctly" and if I put a an audio disc I can play it from Windows Media Player but not from Winamp! Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Haven't tried it with a DVD yet!

    Unhappy

    Update. I have partly fixed the problem by re-installing the drivers and deleting the old CD driver. However new glitches have occured
    Firstly I can access the drive from my computer but a desktop shortcut wont work.
    Secondly the "old" driver keeps re-installing itself so I have to repeat the re-installation ....

    Any help would be appreciated

    There is no firmware update and no drivers on the Liteon website. Running Win XP Pro SP1.
    Any other ideas?

    Make a new shortcut, or R-click and select properties then change the target to the new address.

    On the old driver, when you remove it from Device manager, try it from Safe Mode. May have to even remove all instances of the drivers there are more than one instance of install. Then reboot. Windows should pick them up as new hardware and reinstall the drivers needed for what is installed.

    A bit more info on your PC would be a help.
    If you have it jumpered correctly and connected to the proper IDE channel with a known good cable and it's recognized properly in setup(bios). Then,as Train suggests,remove all instances of it from device mangler in safe mode. When you reboot,Windows should install the basic ATAPI drivers which will allow it to open/play standard cd's...
    Stupid question? No such thing!

    Deleting everything in safe mode and then restarting seems to have helped but I still cannot start the CD just by clicking the icon - message says "please insert disc"

    However can read the disc from Windows Media Player or Nero (but not from Winamp) which means it is usable but there is still a gremlin in the works!

    This is becoming a little more serious than I frst thought because now my computer will not open files from any other drive - even the floppy"A" drive - each time I click the link(s) it says "please insert a disc" . There is obviously some major incompatabilty here - any suggestions how I approach this - should I do system restore?

    This might clear things up.
    Go into safe mode, remove the drivers for the cd devices and shut down.
    Completely disconnect the new liteon, all connections, boot to safe mode and check device manager to make sure the driver is gone.
    Reboot to Windows and try to read the floppy, etc.
    Post back the results please.

    system restore, nah I doubt it will fix it. This is caused by corrupted drivers.

    DO NOT hook the LiteON back up yet.

    CD R/RW disconnected and uninstalled. The "A" drive is now working normally. What should I do next?

    Go ahead hook up the cdrw again and boot up, but first make sure the jumpers on the thing are right.

    Hi again.
    Have been away - Happy New Year everybody. Unfortunately I still have a problem. Did exactly as Train suggested but now none of my disc drives work (floppy, zip and DVDRW) . Feel like putting my old CD back in.....

    I will play around a bit with the jumpers - the CD is on the same IDE cable as the Zip - does it matter which one is master/slave?

    I do not have a ZIP drive and yes it can make a difference where it is attached. Set the zip as master and cd device as slave and if that does not work, switch them.
    Now if that still does not work, try the cd device as the only item on the ribbon.

    Thank you for all your suggestions Train. All is now operational although I spent some time hunting the jumper leads after I dropped them inside the works - really need to have long thin fingers for this game!!

    In the end I set the Zip to Master, DVDRW to slave and then set the BIOS to "auto" to detect which drive was where. That helped a bit but I then uninstalled most of the Nero software that came as a bundle with the DVD drive - and bingo! - all the drives are working!!!

    I am very grateful to you for the help - this is truely a wonderful site and has got me out of a jam more than once!
