Firefox run instead of saveing files
Why must I save every file I download? How come Firefox dosen't come with an run option or open? Is there an extension I can get to use it.
A foolish man claims to know all, but a wise man accepts he doesn't.

it's a safety feature to prevent running of unwanted programs etc.
if you get asked to d/l then it makes you think about what you are d/l and hopefully you'd notice if something questionable was trying to be d/l.

When I click on a file to download it I got a popup box that asks if I want to download or open the file. I am using Firefox 0.8 because the upgrade instructions are too complicated.

Yeah, basically the uninstall. Seems like there are pieces of Firefox everywhere, and not in places where you would really expect to find them. It is the one aspect of Firefox I don't like.
For instance the profile and "chrome" files. I found them one time when I needed to make some changes, but have since forgotten where they are and now cannot find them again. I do recall they were in some rather abstruse location.

It's actually really easy and that thread makes it sound harder than it is.
Uninstall FF 0.8 using Add / Remove in the control panel.
Install FF 1.0 and it will automatically locate your exsiting profile which doesn't get removed.
You might need to reinstall themes and extensions as many compatible with 0.9 or lower are not compatible with 1.0 and you need to get a new version.
Your profle should you choose to back up first is located as per http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/edit#profile

Okay, I'm leaving in the morning for the hospital to have a procedure to correct a heart defect, but when I return I'll give it a go. (The procedure is a catheter electrode deal, so I'm supposed to be home Monday.) If it blows up (the upgrade, not the procedure) I'll blame you.

Well good luck with the heart procedure.
Speedy recovery and all that.

Okay, I'm back. They got the "paryoxsmal atrial tachycardia" corrected, but not the "atrial fibrallition." Involved an electrical shock to the heart which, despite the sedation, I can assure you I felt. Definitely don't want to go through that again, but probably will have to when the fibrillation worsens enough for them to deal with it.
Anyway, the Firefox site says the user files are at :
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\
Well I have some at two locations:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\
Both contain a #######.slt subfolder, below which is a chrome subfolder which contains the user files described in the link you referred me to. But, this is nothing like the user profile described in the Firefox documentation, and what is described there does not exist on my computer.
So what do I need to backup, keep, remove, ignore or what have you?
