call waiting for dial-up..
my parents just got call waiting and caller ID..
I have heard of people being able to use it with dail-up.., so that if someone calls then they can see the name of the caller and put the internet on hold if wanted..
I think that I need an internet service that will allow for this, a modem that supports this, and some software..
my internet service will not allow for it, I was considering switching anyways..
my modem will support it
will the software depend on the ISP I use, or can I use any of them, or what?
can anyone explain to me how it works?
thanx in advanced,
Byan
BTW: what is the numbers I have to put in front of my access number to disable call waiting?

Modem-on-hold requires V.92 support from both your modem and the ISP. Caller ID is separate; you can use whatever software you like for that. I'm not sure exactly how it appears to the user in practice; I just switched to DSL instead.
To find out the code to turn off call waiting you probably need to call your telco.
Safe computing is a habit, not a toolkit.

well, both my modem and my ISP has V.92 support...
does the fact that they have V.92 guarantee me the feature?
anyways, there has to be somesort of software that tells me when someone calls and allows me to initate the modem-on-hold feature...

If your modem supports the v.92 and your isp also supports that option then you should be fine. Some modems have the software install into the hardware of the modem, but if not then a software should have came with your modem to uses the modem-on-hold feature. And if you didn't get either one of those, and you bought a crappy modem from a crappy company.
