Grrrr! Firefox and VDR
I love Firefox. I really do. I've loved it since it was Firebird. I've posted threads praising it.
But I'm pulling my hair out using it with VirtualDr. It's a small, tiny problem but it is driving me nuts. It seems that when I use Firefox to browse VDR, it frequently "forgets" the threads I've seen. I don't have a chance to browse the forums every day, so when I do I rely on the "new post" indicator or the Read New Posts link to see what I've missed. But FF will suddenly wipe that info out and I won't be able to see "unread" posts. They all have the same grey icon beside them.
Like I said, not a major issue and I'm not going to stop using FF (or VDR!) because of it. But it's one of those little problems that irks me because I can't figure out the cause. The problem for me seems to get worse each time I upgrade to a new version, and using 1.0PR it happens all the time. The only direct cause I can find is posting. Each time I post now I lose my history and can't go back to view unread posts. Might be something to do with cookies, but VDR still recognizes who I am.
I've used other forums running the same software as VDR and don't have the same problem. I also don't see the problem when I'm using IE.
I know there have been a few threads in the past about this (a couple by me), but is anyone else still experiencing this? Am I losing my mind? Is there anything I'm overlooking?
Anyways, this is as much of a vent as it is a cry for help. But any suggestions are appreciated!
Cheers,
KV

Hi kv,
Since you didn't get a reply since I seen your problem last night I decided to download Firefox for the first time at Mozilla.com today. I'm not experiencing the same problem that you are describing. When I downloaded this browser, I logged in and clicked "View New Posts" at the top of the main page and it recognizes which thread I have and have not read. I don't have the same problem. The problem is likely with your settings.

Hi Eric,
I've pretty much narrowed it down to only occuring after I post, in fact I know that once I submit this reply I'll lose my "new" posts. It's happened to me with previous versions, and even after a clean install on a new XP installation.
I figure it has to be something to do with the cookie handling, and it could very well be my system configuration, it's a minor annoyance in the overall scheme of things, just bugs me that I can't figure it out.
Oh well, at least my plea encouraged you to download a copy and try it out. Maybe that was their intention all along... ! Hope you're liking it.
Cheers,
KV

Maybe you could find something in VDR, user cp, edit options.
Cookie handling or time offset?

Excuse me for butting in here. But i'm using XP-Pro/sp2 and the latest I.E. The same exact thing happens to me with this browser. The 'newpost' yellow icons stay until I post a reply in someones thread, such as here. If it's a short reply and I go back out, the icons stay yellow. But if I take quite some time to reply, when I go back to a forum page, they are all grey throughout all the forums.
I know this doesn't help you kv,but it does say it may not be happening because you're using a different browser.
I too, would like to know what causes this!?
Stupid question? No such thing!

Hi, from Ridge,
If it's a short reply and I go back out, the icons stay yellow. But if I take quite some time to reply, when I go back to a forum page, they are all grey throughout all the forums.
For me if I take time then I loose the lot, get not registered window and have to start again, also when ever I post I have to close the window and reconnect to VDR, back just sends me to " the page has expired"

Haven't changed my cookie for quite some time. Wonder if the 'cookie monster' has eaten/corrupted it?

Anyone think this might be a corrupt cookie? Just a suggestion and my opinion only because I don't have firefox yet.

FWIW, I think I narrowed down the occurence for me to when I preview a post before submitting. If I preview and then submit, I seem to lose my history. But if I just submit, then it seems to preserve it.
Seems to me it's got to be a cookie issue on the server side if it's happening with both browsers, just strange that I haven't seen it on other boards that use vBulletin.
Well, at least I'm not alone...!
Cheers,
KV

Seems VDR has embedded ads. If you use a popup blocker, or a hosts file, as I do, then problems may occur. Click the down arrow next to the back button. See "ad.doubleclick.net" or "adtmt.com/RCS/view/..." ?
