    K8V SE Deluxe slow boot

I just built the following system...

    AMD Sempron 3100+
    ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
    Kingston PC3200 512MB
    Albatron geFORCE FX5200
Western Digital WD800JB (set on master on primary)
    Thermaltake Purepower 420W PSU
    USB mouse
    PS2 keyboard
IDE CDRom Drive (set on master on secondary)

During the POST, the memory is read fine. When it reads the USB mouse it takes a while but finally finds it. Then when it reads the two IDE devices it takes a while but finally finds them. The boot takes about two minutes. Does anybody know what is going on?

I have turned off the raid controllers in the bios. The only thing installed on the computer is windows xp pro sp1a and the hd is formatted ntfs.

    Thanks

I have the same Mobo but I'm using a SATA HDD and it boots pretty fast.

How about going into the bios and loading the setup defaults and see if that makes a difference.

I loaded the defaults and it took a little longer because if was looking for SATA and RAID stuff. I left something out from my first post. During the boot...

checks memory...it is fine and it does this fast.
checks USB...it is fine but it takes some time.
checks IDE...it is fine but takes some time.
then a black screen is displayed and there is a blinking underbar for like ~15 seconds and then it starts to load windows.
once the windows spash screen is displayed it is only like 5 seconds before I am in windows.

The first things I would check is to make sure the primary slave and secondary slaves are set to none...I would also probably try and replace the ide cables to see if that helps...

Make sure its set to agp for init display instead of pci.....

    Philgo,
When you powered your system on for the first time did it take a while? Do you have any USB devices?

    Sarrkazztic,
I have not had time yet to try your suggestion. But I plan too.

Can anybody else think of anything that can be causing this???

    Thanks

Sorry Casper1676, mine was fine first time too. No permanent USB devices except for printer,

Also built one for someone else last week and that was great also.

That blinking underbar as you call is right about where that mobo should be looking for Sata or ATA devices on their contoller cards.
If you are not using either, using just the regular ide, go into teh bios and disable those items. I have seen upto a minute delay while the computer searches for those items.

I tried a PS2 mouse and that did not work.
I have the RAID and SATA controllers off in BIOS.
The graphic card is set to AGP init.

Does anyone else have this motherboard and did they/did they not have problems? Does anybody else have any ideas...please add them!

    Thanks you guys so far

You could try using cable select on your HDD and your optical drives, that's the way mine is.

You could also try removing both the IDE cables and just boot to a floppy and see how long that takes.

Updating thr bios is also an option.

    Problem solved!!!

Here is what I think the problem was. As I stated before I had one primary IDE HD set as master and one secondary IDE CDRom Drive set as master. It seems with this mobo that if you set the HD to master it assumes you have more than one HD and it hangs during POST to search for that HD. But a second one is never found so it times out and continues. I set the HD to CS instead of master so the mobo assumes there is only one HD and once it was detected it continues. I did not change my CDRom secondary master just the primary HD jumper.

This one jumper solved all three of my problems. The USBs are found quickly, the IDEs are found quickly, and the sata default search only searches for two or three seconds now. My boot time was 1.5-2 minutes and it dropped to 15-20 seconds.

Thanks for all your help and I hope this helps others.

On your WD HDD the Master setting is to have the jumper completely removed. If you had the jumper on the two pins the other side of the CS position then this is the dual position where it expects another drive fitted as slave.

I personally only use CS now, i find it usually works great, just make sure that the drive that you want as Master is on the end.
