sounds like a codec issue to me. Have you tried installing the klite codec pak? MS also has an addon pack that's got some commonly needed codecs too.

But in this case I think it's the klite that you need. It allows you to choose what you want and don't want to install during the installation procedure... Going with the default is what I'd recommend.
