Help. Can't find drivers (audio and video) for HP Pavilion 4509 (win 98)

Finding drivers is a lot easier if you know the make/model of the component you need the drivers for.

To get that information, download, install and run either Belarc Advisor or Everest Home Edition.

Either one will give you lots of information about your system, including the make and model of the various components.

You need the video drivers for your video card. If you don't have them then you need to down load them from the manufacturers website.

First You need to identify your video card. There are a couple ways to do this. First if you open the case and look at the card, you might find some FCC numbers on it.
What were any identifying marks on the video card? Were you able to determine the manufacturer & model?
If there's an FCC ID number on it, you can chase down the manufacturer here: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/
Then, visit the manufacturer's web site to see what they have available for driver downloads.
If you post back with the info, I'm sure someone will help find the correct drivers.

The second way is: If you don't have the info asked for,and you can go online with the PC, go to www.belarc.com and dn/load the "advisor" and run it. It will give much info on both hard and software, and may give you information on the video card. Or http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php Belarc on steroids

Here's a tip that jtdoom brought to our attention:
VIDEOCARD DETECT You can run the following without opening the case to get an idea of the manufacturer and make:
1. From a DOS prompt, Win 3.x, Win9x, WinNT, or Win2K command prompt type "debug" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
2. A single dash will appear at which point type DC000:35 and then press Enter (DC000:50 may also work for newer cards).
3. You may need to type D at the second dash and press Enter for more of the information to appear.

I just looked into this D at the second dash thing. when I kept hitting D I saw things like chip revision and such appear.
Press Q to exit

so, there's a Diamond Viper V770 video card in this computer.

A fourth thing to consider is if you have onboard video, your may need to install the VIA Chipset drivers for your motherboard to get the proper colors and screen resolutions.

Fifth chance is to go to start>run> dxdiag> and see if the video card is identified there under "display".

That HP has video-on-board chipset, modifed by or for HP. It is basically an SiS video chipset, part of the mobo SiS. HP's site has an update driver for the video, and the sound, also on-board, is only an update for a problem.
If you seek newer versions to improve with modern day situations, good luck. Only some hackers home made stuff may be available. Maybe the www.guru3d.com may have info.

If you seek the origianl drivers, they are buried on the HP "Recovery CD" that comes with the system. Finding them to get them off by themselves is a chore. They are hidden in cab files and not easily identifiable. I tried once and gave up. Somebody else claimed success, partially anyways.

If you no longer have the original Recovery CD, finding the original off the wen will be difficult. Only somebody who yanked them from the CD to put up on the web for others is likely to be found.

There are others. You can type in drivers on a google search. Beware any crack sites.....may get more than you seek.

Are you trying to install a "real" version of windows (aka: win98SE, ME, or XP) on the drive in that HP computer?
And thus need the audio/video? Those actually may be included in newer Windows releases as part of their driver cache.
