    CDs not Opening,Reading

Hi All, This is very Long...Appoligies for this, but I'm Stumped/Baffled by what's happening....
HOPE You can HELP...I know how Good you lot are...
    Here Gos------

I opened my "Task Manager" I incerted a CD with these 4 PTE Images....(PicturesToExe). (Also Happening with a few of my photo CDs in Tiff format...Thumbnails takeing ages to show the pic)..
The Window Opens but remains BLANK while the Rom Drive is searching for these Images....Task Manager is Showing a "Folder" (image) when it should be showing a "CD" image..!!
I close the disc Window, Monitor goes Black then Refreshes n I lose my "Security Gaurd from the Quick Launch Bar.....I Click the Rom Drive n Task Manager shows the "CD image"this time...Takes 3 minutes for PC to show these Images in the window..

I will then do this in All 3 Drives----DVDRom Drive, DVDR/W Writer/CDR/W Writer..The same things Happen in All 3 Drives...
Now then, When my Task Manager is showing the "Folder icon image" n I click on (processess/performance/networking, then back to the APPS., A Folder and a CD image will be showing of the same thing with "Not Responding"...3minutes later the window will show the 4 images of PTE.

Something in this PC has gone corrupt!!....Is it a Driver or Task Manager, or Memory, or Services.....I'm Stumped/Baffled..
    Any Ideas.....

I'm confused about something you said. Why would you open "Task Manager" to see what is on your cdrom drive? Usually one does this through "My Computer" chosing either to open or explorer through right click. Task manager only shows what is running in the background it will not show you what data or photos are on a cd or in a cd drive.

Hi Photolady...Don't get to Confused Please....lol
I opened TASK MANAGER to see what the Performance was n what CPU Usage it was useing..I then notice in the APPS that it was showing the Wrong Image for the CDR i was trying to Read/See/open...So if you open yours n incert a CDR in your drive, you should see a cdr icon appear for that CDR....or if you click a Folder, you will see a Folder icon appear. That shows you whats running n if you want to close it......Are You with Me now!!!!!I Hope So!...

my C: drive is FAT32....Will a CDR Writen/Burnt on an NTFS have problems opening on a FAT32 system ? "Yes/No"
Reason for asking is that 1 friend has FAT32 same as me n the CDrs had problems in opening, like mine....Other friend has NTFS n these CDRs Opened OK...I need to solve this without doing a Re-Format, because I don't think a re-format will solve this anyway..JMHO...

I do keep giveing you lot HARD Problems to Solve, Don't I !!!!!!
    THANKS.....

gotcha now. Ok as for them being burned on either FAT32 or NTFS system, that shouldn't matter. It's the burning software that can cause problems with seeing or they way they were burned. I have lots of cds I burned and can still read them in my NTFS winxp pro computer while they were burned when I had win98 FAT32. The only other problem I see here would be if they contained system files from the two file formats. NTFS can see FAT32 but FAT32 cannot see NTFS.

However, have you tried cleaning your drives with a cd lens cleaner?

No Point in Cleaning the Lense Photolady, because everything else i burn works 100%...
I burn Music, MP3s, DVD Videos, VCD, SVCD, JPGS and ALL Show n open with no Probs.....

The Problem was first noted when I was handed a CDR with 4 PTE (PictureToExe) Files on it...6 of these CDRs were handed out to 6 members of our Camera Club to be copied so they can be sent to Everyone from All parts of the World that Entered our "International Photo Competition"...No.1 has the photo copies of their slides, No.2 has copies of their photos, No3 is a Superb Audio Visual of All these, n No4 is a few Images of Swansea, Wales....
CDR was incerted into Rom Drive, Window opened, but the PC kept searching for these Images....If I click to close, the Desktop gos Blank, I then have to Eject the CDR, n Desktop comes back, but my "SpywareGaurd" in the QuickLaunch gos Missing..
This Happens with ALL my Rom Drives...And in my Friends PC..
BUT..On everyone elses PCs it WORKS....The other 5 CDRs work with the other peeps also.(work that un out)
Anyway----I have now discovered that my own earlier saved PTE on CDRs are also failing to show their Icons/Images....But after about 3 to 5 mins it shows the Images n I can open them with no probs......Also some TIFFs on Some CDRs are also takeing ages to show the THUMBNAILS..(like the PC can't find) but once pictures of thumbnails are showing I can open with no probs....
The thumbnails of JPGs show up OK n instantly....That's how all other images/files should do..

I Hope you followed that lot..LOL

You do know that the larger the image the longer it will take for windows to see them. If you have many large images on those cdr's then the time it takes windows to show them, is normal. However, if those cdr's are copies of cdr's could have become corrupt. Have you tried opening them in another drive, say at a friend's PC?

They open very quickly in other machines...use to open instantly in mine as well...So something in this machine is corrupt....Memory/SP1 update/Anything!!
Also i emptied my Prefetch Folder other day, now nothing goes back into it......What exactly does the Prefetch folder do....Should that not hold the files you click on for future fastness of opening!!
I would really like to solve this without haveing to do a Format again....But if i do have to Re-format I will try my XP Pro intergrated with SP1 with only a few progys on hard disc, then see how that opens my files/folders/tiffs/PTE from cdr..

You shouldn't have to reformat to correct this problem. Have you done the usual maintenance. Chkdsk and defrag.

Evidently something is causing a slow down. You could try sfc /scannow to see if that works.

Go to Start Menu>Run>type in sfc /scannow with your xp cd in the drive.
