strange dialup noises coming from my computer

lately ive been hearing ring tones or dialing sounds coming from my computer tower and when i ctrl-alt-del i find that rnaap is present in my list of running programs.

i have a cable modem and rnaap is for dialup. is it due to spyware, a virus or what?

how did it get there? i never encountered this problem before. why does it keep returning. can i get rid of it and if so how?

well, the first thing I would do is unplug your modem..., there are malicous program that will dail phone numbers...., so when you look at your next phone bill.......

I would download both Spybot and Adaware...

Update there definitions, then scan your computer... and delete whatever comes up...

if this doesn't fix your problems, then I would download hijackthis

and then post your log in the hijackthis forum....

dpkkk--If you have no dial up connection established, you do not need a dial up modem. Click My Computer|Device Manager|click the + sign to the left of Modem which should bring up your dialup modem. Right click on it, and you should have the option Disable. Click on that.

thanks ill try that in a bit but i thought i should mention, i had to reinstall windows and since i didnt have the correct driver installed a usb network adapter was attached to my cable modem.

i NEVER had this problem before the adapter was installed. i wanted to know if this new add-on had anything to do with the phantom dialing. or if it is just a strange coincidence.

If you have not unchecked the Install on demands in IE/tools internet options/advanced then you stand a excellent chance of getting a dialer from somewhere on the internet. Along with a whole hdd full of other junk.

By the way, those dialers do exist and if it got on the phone line, you may have $1,000 or more phone bill to pay.

i found a lot of dialer entries in my registry (i searched for 'dialer')


the list include paths to Netscape, IBM Global Network (do i need this if i have a cable modem??), and Zonemap\Domains

can i delete them all?

train--Of course dpkkk should get rid of those dialers, but if he disables his dialup modem, would he be safe? Or can these guys install a new modem or revive the old?
