problem with email folders
i saved some .dbx files (backup files) to return to outlook after reinstalling windows and pasted them onto the outlook folder (c:\windows\application data\identities\{5AE...}\microsoft\outlook) but the folders do not show up in my email when i open it up.
when i create a new folder in my email client i can see it in the outlook folder but the ones i added do not appear.
how come?

Move them to a backup folder. In OE, click on File->Import and point the import function to the backup folder.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Move them to a backup folder. (and leave them there)
Open OutLook Express, click on File->Import and point the import function to the backup folder
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

hmmm....maybe i didnt explain it right.
im trying to put the backed up *.dbx files into folders into my email client. its the folders i want to import along with the messages stored within them not just the messages themselves.
i cant import the folders, somehow they will not appear when i open my email client even after putting them into the store folder
(c:\windows\application data\identities\{5AE...}\microsoft\outlook)
am i missing a critical system file? i cant even view the messages i saved, wordpad cant read them.
reinstall is not an option as i already had to reinstall windows after a crash.

Create new folders in OE with the same names as the ones you have backed up.
Close OE
Replace the newly created (and thus empty dbx files) with the ones you have saved.
Open OE and see if you were successful.
Umm, which email client are you using anyway ? Dbx files are used by Outlook Express not Outlook ...

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.

nothing is working
when i copy a saved dbx file in the store folder it is not created in outlook express when i open it.
for instance i copied a saved dbx file (becomes a folder in outlook with messages in it) named subscription.dbx into the store folder located in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{.....}\Microsoft\Outlook Express but the folder/messages do not appear in outlook when opened.
why werent the folders created?
yes im using outlook express.

Dear dpkkk,
I ran into the same problem a couple of years ago. Very frustrating, and I couldn't find a solution. I ended up downloading the 30 day trial of Mailbag Assistant http://www.fookes.com/mailbag/ which will allow you to access the dbx's as mail within the program. I also found it to be a really good program for organizing, searching and archiving mail, and purchased it.
I haven't tried it but there is also a freeware program:
"MiTeC DBX Viewer
DBX Viewer is a viewer for Microsoft Outlook Express 5/6 message database files(.dbx). Just browse for the .dbx file, open it and the program will display a list of all contained messages and their header. You can choose to view the messages in text or HTML view, sort them and also save them as standard .eml files. Additional features include support for attachments and printing."

Good luck,

--And for the next time you want to backup and restore OE mail folders, here are two ways to do it properly
Simplest is OEBackup
http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx
Official MS procedure is
http://support.microsoft.com/support...s/270/6/70.ASP
What Steve R Jones was trying to tell you, is that you do not just move the folders by copy and paste.
