JAL, given that I have worked with and modified rom code itself in drives I'd say I have a pretty decent idea what the firmware does and doesn't do.

Just notice this statement of yours:
I was able to copy and paste a Mpeg 2 file from the cd to the desktop. The Cd-Rom was able to do that but cannot read the file.
Can you see now how you are confusing "reading" and "playing" of this file. You're drive will not play the file, software on your pc will. Do try the codecs (and appropriate player).

I have resolved the playback of mpeg files but still have not resolved the playback of Divx files. I think the Video Driver just isn't cutting it.

I forgot to enable DMA for the cdrom in device manager. Win98SE.

I am just looking for the Firmware for the CR-588-C or the CR-588 32X Cd-Rom. The Firmware file name is LS15.

I did flash the firmware for the video card to 1.6 from 1.2 and no difference on playback of Divx or Xvid.

I tried a older Cd-Rw and it won't playback Divx smoothly but will play it back choppy. I don't want to leave the Cd-Rw drive in this computer. I would rather find the updated firmware.

I am hoping another Video Card with better drivers and better hardware acceleration, may cure this. This Matrox card is a very old limmited card. No 3D capabilities and slower by far then the say 3 series 3DFX cards of the time. It is the G100-A 4 meg video. I actually have a few of these cards, they all work the same in this system. I have a few other cards laying around that are slightly newer with more ram onboard and quicker acceleration.

Thing is I am not sure what the AGP speed of this board is. This is a FIC VB 609 motherboard.

I will post back with what happens.

But for now it seems the original Cd-Rom will not read Divx or Xvid but another drive will.
