    50%-75% packets lost...

My friend has a network between his and his mothers computer using a crossover cable..., but it suddenly stoped working..

First step to fixing any network is pinging the other's IP address...

1/2 to 3/4 of the pings timeout, but the other ones have a ping under 1 ms..., my first thought was it could be something up with the cable, so I tried hooking up the laptop using the same cable...

the network worked prefectly in place as my friends computer (so , the laptop was networked with his mothers) but when it was in place as his mothers computer, it acted just as before..., meaning the problem must be at my friends end?...

I have never encountered something like this before...

    what do you guys think?

    thanx in advanced,
    Byan

If nothing's changed then it sounds like a hardware problem of some kind. Grabbing a spare NIC would normally be my first suggestion, but there was a similar problem recently here which turned out to be caused by the video card.

k..., thats what I was going to do next..., I'll have to find a store that will allow me to return the card if it isn't the cause...

right now he has Onboard LAN, doubt it makes a difference though...

I saw that just after starting this thread...., really odd.., I wouldn't think that would fix it, since this a worked before, and as I recall, the other computer could never get the LAN to work correctly...

    thanx again,

I would suspect the cabling first. Since it is a direct cross over cable, right. check the connections at both ends. Try a new cross over cable first.

Also, it is always a good step to rule out virus's. Are both computers sharing an Internet connection?
