Not sure if this is the right forum but feel free to move it.

When I use a 98 or 95 boot disk from bootdisk.com I find that the CD Drive is usually named Banana by the boot disk and the CD drive letter is designated as R:. I find this confusing enough and feel that a newcomer to this forum with limited skills would find this even more confusing.

Any comments? Does it work this way with other operating systems?

It is just the design of the config file within the boot disk so that the CD Rom letter allocation does not interfere with other possible drive allocations.

The config.sys file has Lastdrive=Z so R: must be designated somewhere.

Oh well, guess this is one of my pet peeves around here. Feel this could be confusing to some.

I've always liked it -- anytime I see a reference to "R: BANANA," I know where they've gotten their bootdisk from!

The bootdisk should contain an autoexec.bat file. You need to look for a line similar to the following:

.......MSCDEX.EXE /D:ASUSCD01 /V /L:R

My CD is an asus. Your's may be different. The last switch, /L:R specifies the CDROM drive letter.

Caveats: When explicitly specified in this manner, obviously, the drive letter should be higher than any hard-drive assigned letter. And the lastdrive statement should contain a letter higher than any used letters.
